Was Zanjoe Marudo scandalized by a brutal pivotal scene in The Broken Marriage Vow?
The scene required Zanjoe’s character David to pummel his wife Jill (Jodi Sta. Maria) in a fit of rage.
In an exclusive interview with PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal), the show’s director Connie Macatuno confirmed she had to reason with Zanjoe, who asked why his character had to be physically violent.
She said, “Pareho kami ni Zanjoe, hindi kami mahilig sa violence in a scene.
“Pero sabi ko, ‘Kailangan mo itong gawin kasi panakot ito, panindak sa lalaking malaki, matangkad na sinisindak ang isang petite na babae.’”
In fact, Direk Connie deliberately strayed from the theatrical approach of South Korea’s The World of the Married for the same scene.
Both The Broken Marriage Vow and The World of the Married are adaptations of BBC’s Doctor Foster.
She told PEP.ph that the scene was shot "for all of those women na binatter o viniolate.”
She explained, “I want them to connect to it, for anyone who has been strangled, hurt, thrown, bruised, and so that they get a sense of healing, understanding na detached.
“Yung makita nila na, ‘Ah, ito pala talaga ito,’ and then to pick up the pieces after that, just like kung papaano yung ginawa ni Jill.”
But, according to her, both she and Zanjoe felt that the emotions that ran high during the shoot didn’t seem to translate in the final cut.
Direk Connie sighed heavily to signal the weight of emotions when she said, "Alam mo, sa totoo lang, even when I’m editing also, hindi rin nga pareho kung papaano namin naramdaman sa shoot. Grabe kasi yung sa shoot, e, yung may ganun.”
She recalled telling Zanjoe to see how the viewers would react to the violent scene.
“Yung reaksiyon ng tao, if they feel this strongly for Jill, it means maganda yung binigay mong pang-aapi. Otherwise, pag lame, hindi naman sila magru-root for Jill.
“Pero the fact na [the reaction was], ‘Grabe naman yung lalaking ‘to!’ …
"Nag-e-exist kasi yung ganung lalaki na, jusko, ang dami mong mali na ginagawa, pero kasi naman ang charming mo, ang hot mo!”
How does the story end for Zanjoe’s character David? Find out in the finale of The Broken Marriage Vow, which airs on June 24 at 9:20 p.m. on the Kapamilya Channel.
