With a third installment already in talks, Chris Hemsworth may have unlocked a second signature role beyond his tenure as Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe — thanks to his portrayal of Tyler Rake in the Extraction movie franchise.

In the highly anticipated Extraction 2: No Escape film, Tyler finally receives a bare bones character development that delves into the roots of his troubled history, clueing in on the reason behind his resignation from the Special Air Service, and turning into a black ops mercenary.

CRAZY GOOD ACTION

If you come solely for the affray and bloodshed, you're in for a nail-biting, edge-of-your-seat cinematic experience that rarely lets up. Credits go to the film's director Sam Hargrave with his long experience of being a stunt director.

After being clinically dead for nine months, a brawny, survivalist Tyler is back on war grounds to find purpose in going on living. He infiltrates Tkachiri Prison in Georgia to extract his sister-in-law and her two kids.

A personal favorite is the prison courtyard action sequence—simply bellissimo, chef's kiss, down to the very last second! It is skillfully sewn together, creating a dynamic, very animated feel reminiscent of RPG (role-playing games) or FPS (first-person shooter) video games.

Additionally, the highly anticipated "helicopter landing on a moving train" oner scene, heavily hyped by Hemsworth and Hargrave during promotional events globally, lives up to expectations.

NOOD KA MUNA!

The tracking shot following the enemies' helicopter's descent creates a sense of exhilaration that Tyler is just inches away from capture or even death. The fight scenes and close-ups that follow are intense and tightly choreographed, delivering a succession of powerful blows and punches met with crushing, yet satisfying retaliation.

It goes without saying that Hemsworth and the rest of the cast, deliver outstanding performances. Though the storyline is still on the weaker side, their acting plus the heavy armory really help shape the movie for what it is now.

One of the standout qualities of this sequel is its refusal to settle for predictable, adrenaline-fueled action. Rather than simply satisfying a craving for suspense, it piques curiosity and triggers the imagination, leaving audiences intrigued and eager to witness how a threequel can surpass the already pulse-pounding masterpiece.

MORE JUSTIFIED RESCUING

What valiant mark its predecessor failed to hit, the sequel makes up for and more. For one, it is so refreshing that the second installment breaks away from the tired, white savior narrative.

The term "white saviorism" of white savior complex is a critical portrayal of a white individual who is depicted as the liberator, rescuer, or uplifter of non-white individuals, leading to a messianic regard for them.

Instead of spotlighting Tyler as the typical white hero—wreaking havoc in a South Asian territory (by the way, with a dreadful yellow filter), and going to extreme lengths for an Indian boy named Ovi, disregarding plot justifications and character build-up—the sequel adds weight and depth by emphasizing Tyler's personal connection with the people he's trying to save.

This time, Tyler's choices become more coherent as we come to understand that he is rescuing his own kin from the clutches of the Nagazi, a Georgian criminal organization led by the vengeance-seeking Zurab.

What's fascinating is that, compared to the first movie, it's now easier to empathize with the main characters, even amid the high-octane combat sequences that should have been more emotionally driven with several downtimes for Tyler and Ovi to bond and grow closer.

Whereas before, Tyler was pretty much forced by the plot to act outside its character, forging ties that were flat and underwhelming, contributing to a white saviorist approach. In the sequel, it cracks open a rock-ribbed shell to dig out Tyler's human nature in pure form.

Though it's worth noting that before Extraction 2 unpacks all the action, Tyler was revered as the "myth of Mumbai, the legend that got the journalist out of Congo, that took down the two gangs to save the mayor of Rio." So, there's that.

PLOT HOLE BALANCE

Action films have a knack for tricking and staging idealistic circumstances to reach a happy ending, which is why it's no wonder that Extraction 2 has done just that.

The only consolation to this cliché is that for every relieving deus ex machina dragged in conveniently to resolve seemingly unsolvable situations, there is an equally devastating loss that counters such reassurance.

During the crucial "all is lost" moment in the film, it becomes evident that Yaz Khan's untimely death serves only one purpose: to pave the way for his sister, Nik Khan, to make a surprising and last-minute appearance. Her arrival acts as a distraction and ultimately aids in the rescue of Tyler and the kidnapped boy, Sandro.

This demise raises questions about the lack of backstory and character development for the Khan siblings. Viewers are left to root for them solely based on their alignment with Tyler, without truly knowing their motivations or history. Despite being recurring main characters, they are given minimal substance, leaving audiences wanting more exploration of their narrative.

CONCLUSION

Ultimately, Extraction 2 is a superior watch than the first installment. It takes bolder strides, brings more action to the table, and the relationship between the characters is more comprehensible.

Each choice made by the protagonist is more logical and grounded, stemming from an undisguised trauma.

In addition, it does an exceptional job of setting the stage for a threequel, leaving room for anticipation and speculation about what lies ahead for Tyler.
