Class recital ng FDCP Film School: Meisner Crash Course for Actors workshop sa Hulyo 16, 2023, Linggo, sa Cinematheque Centre Manila.
Isang linggo ang free workshop na dinisenyo para sa professional working actors.
Ang tatlong mentors sa training program ay sina Angeli Bayani, Alecx Lorica, at Norbs Portales na certified Meisner teachers. Aprubado sila ng Meisner school sa Los Angeles, California.
"May junior version ang Meisner workshop, but this time, it’s for students. An acting course for students," lahad ng technical consultant ng Film Development Council of The Philippines (FDCP) na si Direk Jose Javier Reyes.
"It’s a long-term workshop also for students, and again… my god, it’s for free, okay. I-o-audition iyong mga bata na mag-a-apply…
"Alam niyo, ang gusto naming i-inculcate sa mga batang artista—acting is an art and a craft, and you don’t become an actor to be a celebrity.
"Being a celebrity is only a fringe benefit, but what is important is to take the craft seriously.
"Because it is those who take the craft seriously who last the longest, okay. It’s not enough that you become a sensation.
"But what is important is you give a certain degree of artistic contribution, okay."
Maganda raw ang teknik base sa Meisner method.
"I’ve read a lot about Meisner. I’ve seen the YouTube videos of Meisner. And eventually, kung matuloy ang plans, magkakaroon ng workshop, the director and actor of the Meisner method.
"How do you direct? Yung relasyon ng direktor at aktor. Di ba, yung iba, 'Direk, anong gagawin ko?'
"Yung direktor, kailangang alam niya kung paano ma-motivate yung artista."
Iba-ibang school ang mga acting workshop. Iba-iba ng teknik.
Pahayag ng multiawarded scriptwriter-director na si Direk Joey, "Ang maganda kasi sa Meisner, alam mo, kung bobo ka, hindi ka papasa.
"Because doon, nag-iisip ka. Kasi dito, sa Meisner, no two takes must be the same, okay.
"And so far, sa lahat ng artistang nakatrabaho ko, siguro dalawa lang ang ganun. Na kapag iba ang take, iba ang atake, pero hanep, alam mong nag-iisip siya."

ON JUDY ANN SANTOS AS A "THINKING ACTOR"
Sino ang dalawang artistang iyon?
Napabuntong-hininga si Direk Joey, "O, isa, si Judy Ann Santos. Yung pag dalawang take mo, may pagkakaiba.
"Kasi alam niya, iniisip niya, at fresh lagi. Hindi ka naka-auto-pilot. E, pag nagteleserye ka kasi, you have a tendency to go into auto-pilot acting, e.
"Siyempre naman, kung alas cinco y media na ng umaga, paiiyakin ka, hindi ba, naka-auto-pilot ka… You need a thinking actor."

Napabilib si Direk Joey sa akting ni Juday sa pelikula niyang Mga Mumunting Lihim (2012), na tinampukan din nina Iza Calzado, Agot Isidro, at Janice de Belen.
Maliban kay Judy Ann, ang isa pang artistang hinahangaan nang lubos ni Direk Joey ay si Janice de Belen.
"I think ang proof niyan is yung longevity ng kanilang development as actresses," pagmamatwid ni Direk Joey.
"From child actresses… it matters a lot, e. It matters a lot.
"Hindi mo naman naa-achieve ang refinery at sophistication ng acting through the number of workshops you attended."

FDCP ACTIVITIES
Samantala, pinaghahandaan na ng FDCP ang pagdiriwang ng Philippine Film Industry Month sa Setyembre.
"Last year ang theme natin is Tuloy Ang Kuwento: Ang Pagbabalik Ng Pelikulang Pilipino," salaysay ni Direk Joey.
"This year, we’re going to give tribute to Filipino comedians, okay. And this year, we’re giving the highest tribute to Dolphy.
"We are celebrating the various film comedians. We will give respect to Pugo, Togo, remember Chichay, Aruray, Cynthia Patag.
"All these people who used to be the comedic benches before, okay. But more so, we’re going to put them to the forefront like…
"I mean, how can you discuss Philippine comedy now without mentioning Vice Ganda, Eugene Domingo, Ai Ai de las Alas and the rest?"
Kasado na raw ang lineup of activities ng FDCP para rito.
"So we’re going to have a whole month celebrating Philippine comedy. Ang tawag namin, Sine Halakhak. It’s a tribute to Philippine comedy.
"There’s Sine Sinta: Pag-ibig at Pelikula, na naging successful ito last February. Nag-free screening kami sa Luneta, okay, ng mga loveteam-loveteam. Na-appreciate ng mga tao sa Luneta.
"Ngayon, we’re going to have screenings of two comedy movies in Luneta for free. Open to the public, for free.
"Pina-finalize namin yun, may inaambisyon kami na dalawang film—a Eugene Domingo and an Ai-Ai de las Alas film to be shown there for free.
"Then we have the screening tribute to the King of Philippine Comedy, which is on the closing night, we are giving a tribute to Dolphy who should have been a National Artist noon pa."

ON STATE OF PH FILM INDUSTRY
Lumalahok ang mga pelikulang Pilipino sa iba’t ibang international film fest. Kahit iyong mga nagkakamit ng parangal, kapag ipinalabas na sa local cinemas ay hindi masyadong tinatangkilik ng moviegoers.
"Iyon ang pinakamasaklap. Mas marami pang taong banyaga na nakapanood ng mga Lav Diaz at Brillante Mendoza kaysa sa mga Pilipino," saad ni Direk Joey.
"And yet iyan ang mga kinikilalang filmmaker… What is the problem? I guess it’s Film Education… One good thing that happened during the pandemic, tumaas ang antas ng panlasa ng Pilipino.
"Dahil kasi nakulong sa bahay, nanood ng Netflix, okay. Nanood ng mga K-drama. Kaya yung mga pichi-pichi na drama, hindi ba,****** ginaganyan nila. Maski yung yaya ko sa bahay, 'Ewww!’'Ginaganyan na nila pag pichi-pichi ang drama.
"Kasi tumaas ang antas nila, and that’s important. That the audience becomes more demanding. And that’s why we are emphasizing Film Education."
Ang local drama series na sinusubaybayan sa YouTube ng yaya ni Direk Joey ay ang Dirty Linen.
ON TICKET PRICING FOR MOVIES
Bilang incentive sa mga movie producer, wino-work out ni FDCP Chairman Tirso Cruz III na magkaroon ng tax exemption o tax holiday.
"At saka kinakausap din para ibaba nang konti ang presyo ng admission ticket sa sinehan," sabi ni Direk Joey.
"Magkano ang minimum wage? PHP570. Kung ang tiket mo ay PHP300 or almost PHP400, yun dating nanonood ng Filipino movies cannot afford anymore."
Kalaban ng mga sinehan ang streaming platforms, na gaya ng Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, HBO Go at Vivamax.
"We can’t help that, ‘no, it’s inevitable part of technology, e, di ba?" pag-amin ni Direk Joey.
"Papunta na tayo dun, e, na-facilitate lang ng pandemic. Papunta na dun, e. E, nung pandemic, nakulong tayo nang tatlong taon, nanood ng Netflix, ba’t ka pa lalabas? “
"Napabilis lang. Magkano ba ang bayad mo sa Netflix, PHP499 a month?"
STRUGGLES OF MOVIE PRODUCERS
Kokonti pa rin ang mga pelikulang Pilipino na ipinapalabas sa mga sinehan. Dati, normal na may tatlong bagong Pinoy movie na ipinapalabas sa theaters every week.
Pagbabalik-tanaw ni Direk Joey, “During the time ng aking kabataan at kasariwaan, hindi ba, bawa’t buwan may ginagawa kaming pelikula?
"Regal came up with my God, in one year, 54 movies?! E, ngayon, masuwerte tayo to reach 30.
"Ahhhh… you take it a day at a time, e. What is important is to give incentives to producers to produce again.
"But there’s still crazy ones who do it. A good example is our friend Joji Alonso. She still produces About Us But Not About Us. She still produces Here Comes The Groom, hindi ba?
"You still have crazy ones like Roselle Monteverde who did Ang Mga Kaibigan ni Mama Susan. Pre-pandemic yun pero mabuti, nabili. Nabili ng Amazon.
"Kasi ang hirap ngayon, alam mo pag nag-produce ka at nilabas mo sa sinehan, para kang kumuha ng blade at nilaslas mo," pagmumuwestra pa ni Direk Joey.
Mula nang mag-open ang local cinemas noong Nobyembre 10, 2021 ay dalawang pelikula pa lang ang tinangkilik nang lubos ng Pinoy moviegoers, ang Maid in Malacañang at Deleter.
"Those are the real blockbusters,” sambit ni Direk Joey. "Ito kasing recent Summer MMFF, sad to say, lahat nalugi. Lahat, pati yung topgrosser, nalugi."
Hindi na uso ang pelikulang Pilipino?
"Ang laki ng kalaban, e. Ang kalaban, yung bentilador at saka yung sofa!” bulalas ng veteran filmmaker.
"Di ba? Once lumabas ka at nanood ng sine, ang gastos mo, close to PHP1,000, e.
"E, kung nag-subscribe ka sa Netflix, nakapambahay ka, may bentilador, kumakain ka ng cheese curls. Hanggang tubuan ng kulaba yung mata mo, nanonood ka.
"How do you beat that? It’s a worldwide problem."
