It comes as a surprise to fans of the Kapuso actor David Licauco that he is not only willing to do a gay role in the future, but also quite enthusiastic about it.
It all came to light during a brief interview at the Sparkle GMA Artist Center's Signed for Stardom 2023 event last Friday, September 22, 2023.
One of the hosts Rain Matienzo asked David, "May hindi ka pa ba nagagawa sa showbiz na gusto mong gawin? Kasi nagawa mo na period drama [and] action, what else do you want to try?"
After a moment thinking about it, David said with a touch of humor, "Gay role..."
David didn't elaborate then, but he reaffirmed it in an exclusive interview with PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) on Saturday, September 23, 2023, during the Bench Fashion Week Holiday 2023+.
"Well, I'm open for it," he said.
However, David acknowledged that his initial response was made in a playful, offhand manner, "I said that na wala lang... I mean, kilala niya mo naman ako, medyo ma-joke."
But again he said he has always been open to portraying a gay leading role when called upon by circumstances.
He said, "I don't know, siyempre challenge yun. Lahat ng mga roles na nabibigay sa akin, as long as it's gonna serve me right... If it's so good, maybe I'll do it."
Back in 2020, he responded affirmatively to an inquiry from PhilStar, stating that he would be open to starring in his own boys' love (BL) series, provided the fans would approve and the project pass his standards of quality.
But for now, he is focused on his action star status in the Kapuso remake of the movie Maging Sino Ka Man.
David said their prime-time series' viewers have been surprised by his adeptness in action scenes, and he credited the directors for their guidance and support.
"I think, nagulat sila na kaya ko po lang mag-action. Siyempre, sa tulong yun ang mga directors, kaya nakakatuwa."

GRATEFUL FOR PROJECTS
Meanwhile, David conveyed his appreciation for being included in the Sparkle GMA Artist Center's Signed for Stardom 2023 event, an occasion where Kapuso stars renewed their contracts.
When asked about the event, he said, "I think it's a great move by GMA to do that every year. But siyempre, it's a time for artists to gather in one event."
David emphasized his appreciation for the trust and support the Kapuso Network has placed in him, saying, "With GMA also for their support, for their trust in me.
"I think maraming artista, maraming mas pogi sa akin, maraming mas magaling...
"Pero for them to trust someone like me, nakakatuwa yun. It's such a huge honor."
Additionally, David expressed his gratitude towards Bench for their enduring partnership.
"So every year, every season, ginagawa namin ito [fashion show]. So it's always a blessing to be an endorser for Bench.
"And siyempre, yung Bench yung tumulong sa akin from the very start sa career ko.
"So siyempre ako, kahit busy, I make time for Bench all the time kasi Bench is still there noong wala pa ako sa shows...
"So sobrang laking pasasalamat ko sa Bench... I would say that they really helped me to be the artist that I am today."
