The latest papal conclave filled Manila Archbishop Jose Cardinal Advincula, Kalookan Bishop Pablo Virgilio Cardinal David, and Metropolitan Archbishop emeritus of Manila Luis Antonio Tagle with a profound sense of awe and humility.

On Friday, May 9, 2025, the three Filipino cardinals spoke candidly at a press conference held at the Pontificio Collegio Filippino in Rome, where they shared their experiences during this significant event.

The conclave concluded with the election of Cardinal Robert Prevost as the new Pope Leo XIV.

Cardinal Tagle reminisced about his feelings and insights, drawing comparisons to his first conclave in 2013, when the late Pope Francis was elected.

He said, "Pangalawang conclave ko na ito."

CARDINAL DAVID ON "JOYFUL SURPRISE" OVER CONCLAVE RESULT

The unexpected election of Robert Prevost as Pope Leo XIV surprised many, especially on social media, where different "frontrunners" had been anticipated to replace the late Pope Francis.

Cardinal David, however, described the election as a "surprise of joy," explaining that the papal election is a spiritual process deeply rooted in faith and divine guidance.

He told the press, "Siguro yung nagulat [yung iba] ay dahil mayroong ini-expect kaagad, parang may kandidato o may manok.

Cardinal Advincula echoed this sentiment, noting the discernment and prayerful process that led them to feel the Holy Spirit's guidance, making their selection task feel lighter.

Cardinal Advincula said, "Bago kami mag-votation, we also went through a lot of prayer and discernment.

CARDINAL TAGLE: GRATEFUL

Meanwhile, Cardinal Tagle expressed gratitude towards those who had faith in him and considered him a potential candidate for the papacy, although even he himself never imagined it.

He acknowledged the surprised reactions of Filipinos to the unexpected papal election results, reiterating Cardinal Advincula’s emphasis on the importance of relying on the Holy Spirit and dedicated prayer during the election.

Kaya ang bawat vote ay hindi for someone or against someone.

Moreover, Cardinal Tagle stressed that church ministry is governed by principles which, he says, are different from worldly affairs.

Highlighting the need for genuine discernment before God, Cardinal Tagle said: "Siguro... ito ay isang parang spiritual learning sa atin na when it comes to the ministry in the church, ang criteria, ang approach ay hindi katulad ng yung nangyayari sa mundo.

"Kaya yung pagsinabing we rely on the Holy Spirit at ang through prayer, disiplinado dapat kaming lahat na hindi isipin o magpadala na kandidatong ako.

CALL FOR PRAYERS AND SUPPORT

Following the election of Pope Leo XIV, the three Filipino cardinal electors urged the faithful to offer prayers and support for the new Pope.

Cardinal Advincula encouraged gratitude to God for the new Pope and called for continuous prayers throughout his papacy.

He underlined: "Siguro ang may ipa-abot kong mensahe sa kapwa kong Pilipino ay yung magpapasalamat tayo sa Panginoon sa pagbigay sa atin sa kanyang handog na bagong Santo Papa in the person of Pope Leo XIV.

"And then, we all know na, although sa tingin po natin being a Pope is an honor, pero this is also a very great responsibility.

Cardinal David expressed his gratitude and hope that Filipinos will also be guided to choose the right leaders in the upcoming local elections.

"Of course, alam naman natin we distinguish between religious leaders and political leaders.

He also conveyed a message to government aspirants, urging them to embrace new leadership styles inspired by the exemplary leadership demonstrated by past Popes, as they assume their roles in government.

"May isang kardinal na took note of that.

So yun po, salamat."
