Trigger Warning: Graphic description of crime committed mentioned

Over the years, Maalaala Mo Kaya has delivered memorable episodes that left a lasting impact on viewers, some stirring controversy because of their sensitive subject matter.

Just recently, the long-running drama anthology took on the heartbreaking and tragic story of the Maguad siblings' murder in Cotabato that occurred in December 2021.

The two-part episode titled "The Silent House" stars Dimples Romana, Joem Bascon, Criza Taa, Miguel Vergara, and Karina Bautista.

Netizens praised the cast for their performances, and viewers closely followed both episodes, which were seen on multiple platforms: Kapamilya Channel, Kapamilya Online Live, A2Z, and iWant.

A REAL-LIFE TRAGEDY

In the afternoon of December 10, 2021, the lifeless bodies of teenagers Crizzle Gwynn Maguad and Crizvlle Louis "Boyboy" Maguad were found by their father inside their house.

The scene was horrific: Crizzle Gwynn, 18, bore multiple stab wounds, while Crizvlle Louis, 16, was bound and showed signs that he had been beaten.

Investigations would later reveal that the crime was committed by the family's adopted daughter, Janice Sebial Emuelin, 16, and another person identified as Esmeraldo Cañedo Jr.

Initially, Janice claimed that she hid in the bathroom as masked men assaulted Crizzle and Crizvlle.

However, inconsistencies in Janice's version of the story, her erratic behavior, and pieces of evidence gathered by authorities raised suspicions.

Janice would confess to the crime on December 16, 2021, saying jealousy of Crizzle and Crizvlle lead her to plan the murder.

The court sentenced Janice to 30 years' imprisonment.

Esmeraldo was also found guilty of carrying out the killings.

Both accused were minors at the time of the crime, placing their trial under the jurisdiction of the Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act or Republic Act No. 9344.

Under this law, individuals aged over 15, but below 18, found to have acted with discernment, may be held criminally liable.

However, the courts are mandated to impose suspended sentences, with offenders required to undergo rehabilitation during the suspension period.

Janice and Esmeraldo were initially placed under the custody of the Department of Social Welfare and Development.

The two started serving their jail sentences when they turned 18 years old.

MMK ISSUES STATEMENT

The MMK episode sparked strong public reactions, bringing the topic of adoption—and its perceived advantages and disadvantages—under the spotlight.

There are also concerns that the episode could influence public perception of adoption and reinforce negative stereotypes about adopted children.
