After surviving bacterial meningitis in 2020, Lani Misalucha said she has learned to focus on life's biggest blessings rather than its hardships: "My husband and I are still alive. And, we still get to do what we love to do, you know... enjoy our grandchildren, and we get to still do a lot of, you know, fun things with, with family and friends... Nagpapasalamat kami na okay pa rin kami. Yun naman yang importante."

If there's one song that has become synonymous with Lani Misalucha's career, it's "Bukas Na Lang Kita Mamahalin."

More than two decades after it first captured the hearts of Filipinos, the iconic ballad is taking on a new life through a remastered edition released by Misalucha in 2026.

The singer officially launched the remastered version on June 10, 2026, during her unveiling as the newest ambassador of jewelry brand The Dainty Queen at The Manila Hotel.

Originally composed by Jimmy Borja and first recorded by Jude Michael in 1997, the song found its definitive voice when Misalucha recorded it for her 2000 album All Heart under Viva Records.

THE SONG THAT STOOD THE TEST OF TIME

Looking back on the journey of the song, Lani admitted that she never expected it would become the classic that it is today.

She told members of the press: "In the beginning, of course, yung hindi mo talaga alam kung anong mangyayari, di ba, sa song? Kung ano ang magiging future niya, di ba?

"But then again, nung tumatakbo na rin ang panahon, somehow yung mga tao parang, you know, they had gotten used to hearing that song and hanggang sa naging parang naging anthem na nga ng karamihan."

For the singer, part of the song's magic lies in the story crafted by its songwriter.

"Ganoon ka-special yung song kasi hindi ko alam kung ano yung tumatakbo sa utak ni Jimmy Borja kung bakit niya nabuo yung story ng song na iyon."

Lani believes the song's longevity also comes from the fact that listeners can interpret it in their own way.

She said, "It doesn't matter kung ano yung perspective niya doon sa song na iyon. Pero para sa akin, it could be a song ng bawat isa, you know.

"We can actually interpret a song many different ways, di ba? Whether it is a heartbreak song, you can actually interpret it na hindi, di ba?"

After more than 26 years, she remains grateful that she was given the opportunity to record what would become one of the most important songs of her career.

"So, I'm really very grateful that I get to record it. I had the chance to call it mine, and I'm very grateful to Jimmy Borja for giving me that song."

HOW THE REVIVAL CAME ABOUT

The remastered edition was born out of discussions surrounding Lani's appointment as ambassador of The Dainty Queen, a jewelry brand founded by business couple Fae and Eli Escular.

Victor Harry Hartmann, CEO of Hartmann Communications, recalled being tasked with finding a personality who embodied the brand's core values.

He shared: "When my friends from The Dainty Queen, of course, the Dainty Queen herself, Ms. Fae Escular and Kuya Eli Escular talked to me about, you know, 'We need to find a face for the brand. Someone who is timeless. Someone who is elegant. Someone who evoke the value of TDQ.'"

For Harry, the answer became clear when he reflected on what the brand represents.

He recalled, "What's the value of TDQ anyway? Heirloom, something that you can pass on. It's a story more than just a wearable investment that it is, you know."

That's when one name immediately came to mind.

"Sabi ko, 'What do you guys think of Ms. Lani Misalucha?' Because I've always viewed her as timeless."

According to Harry, Lani perfectly embodies the qualities that define both an heirloom and a lasting artist—classic, iconic, enduring, and constantly evolving.

He said one of the things he admires most about the singer is her resilience and willingness to adapt through different chapters of her life and career.

"One thing that I admire about her is her constant evolution and being so unapologetic about that.

He continued: "That, 'I'm gonna transcend all the difficulties that life will throw at me. You're telling me I look like this? Okay. I'm gonna look better next year. But my sound, my voice, will never be lost.'"

Harry then thanked the singer for inspiring others through her journey.

"Thank you, Nay, for being such an inspiration. And for evoking what The Dainty Queen stands for."

The idea instantly resonated with Fae Escular, who revealed that she had been a longtime admirer of Misalucha and her music.

Recalling her younger years, Fae shared how "Bukas Na Lang Kita Mamahalin" became a staple during karaoke sessions.

"Siguro, everybody can relate to me, during my younger years kasi matagal na yung kanta na 'to, e. Sabi niyo nga sa karaoke."

She added: "When I was younger, I was in nursing school... After school, siyempre, happy happy. And then, magka-karaoke kami. And then, I would sing the song.

"And talagang I'm such a fan na itong kanta na 'to is always there. It's always been there. It's here. Hindi siya nawala. E, lagi siyang kinakanta."

So when Harry suggested partnering with Lani, she immediately embraced the idea.

"So parang nung inano sa akin ni Harry na, 'What do you think of Ms. Lani?'"

She continued: "Siyempre, di ba, parang at this point in my life, I think parang feeling ko deserve ko ng meet si Ms. Lani.

"And I think she's the perfect face for the Dainty Queen."

With the remastered recording in place, the team tapped acclaimed filmmaker Jason Magbanua to create a new performance music video for the song.

Rather than focusing solely on Lani's powerful vocals and signature stage presence, Magbanua wanted to highlight the emotional depth of the lyrics.

He explained: "First, we go by lyrics, right? Lyrics and emotional depth of what it makes me feel basically, right?

"And the way that Jimmy wrote this is just, like, amazing. It, saka it tugs at you, e, right?"

Jason said the biggest challenge was striking a balance between showcasing Lani as a performer and allowing the song's message to take center stage.

"What I had to do was balance because Miss Lani is a performer and there were parts of the performance, it's a performance video basically...

"Like, she was going all out, and with her arm movements and belting, right? But I had to really temper that and just really make sure that the message comes across."

For the director, the song is ultimately about a deeply personal conversation that remains unsaid.

"I wanna temper that with, hey, this is a conversation that I'm having with a partner that I can't have right now. So, ganun."

While the video still embraces Lani's performance style, Jason intentionally pulled back in certain moments to create a greater emotional impact.

"That's my train of thought na parang, 'Okay, there's, this is a performance. There's a little bit of, like, we call it the Pilita, right?' May mga ganun.

"But there were some parts talaga, 'Okay, we're gonna take it down a notch, two notches even. I just want you [to] look at the camera. Just like almost whispering the lyrics...'"

He said authenticity guided every creative decision throughout the shoot.

"And my direction to her was like, 'Feel it. Feel it like this is the first time that you're singing this and this is what you want to express to this particular person at that particular moment in time.'

"So, that I had to temper the performance with emotional, like, I guess, honesty and authenticity. So, I was always thinking of that the whole time during the shoot."

BUKAS NA LANG KITA MAMAHALIN: REMASTERED

Lani went back to the studio with her long time collaborator acclaimed musical director and sound engineer, Adonis Tabanda, for the remastered edition of the song.

Recalling the moment she went back to the studio to rerecord, Lani admits that she was nervous.

She shared, "Sa totoo lang, ako, ninenerbiyos ako. Kasi noon, nung first time kong ni-record siya, okay, bata pa ako noon, okay.

"Pangalawa, hindi ko alam kung papaano ko i-a-associate yung sarili ko doon sa kanta because unang-una, married na ako.

"Alam naman natin lahat kung ano ang story ng 'Bukas Na Lang Kita Mamahalin,' di ba? So, I really tried my best kung papaano ko ilalagay yung sarili ko doon sa story ng 'Bukas Na Lang Kita Mamahalin.'"

Lani said most of the pressure came on thinking how she would deliver the song, especially since she has performed it countless of times, and did different versions in concerts.

She said, "This time parang I really have to put in a lot of effort. Meron akong conscious effort na, 'Oh my gosh, I'm going to have to re-record this song."

Lani added, "Ilang taon na ba yung tumakbo na yun na from the very first time na ni-record ko siya... Mas parang feeling ko mas nakaka-nerbiyos siya.

"Because siyempre, you know, it was sung like, I don't know how many times I performed it.

"And people had heard it, like, yun nga, so many times. And then siyempre parang, 'Shucks, papaano ito uli ire-redo in a way na parang it's going to be new. It's gonna be fresh...'

"But I don't want the people to be alienated because, of course, they had been accustomed to the original.

"So yung ginawan ni Adonis na parang ganun din. Parang ayaw niyang talagang completely different from the original.

"That's why yung pinaka-music itself na ginawa niya is, you know, mellow siya pero hindi heavy ballad.

"It's more of a smooth jazz na parang alam mo yung sexy lang siya.

"So, even the singing is not too far different from the original. Para at least, you know, the tema and the flow is a little different."

But among the singers who has done a cover of the song, which one is her favorite?

"Charice Pempengco," Lani shared without batting an eyelash.

She explained, "My gosh, alam naman natin kung paano kumanta si Charice Pempengco noon, di ba? Talagang ang husay.

"Punung-puno ng dibdib, punung-puno ng puso. Malinis! Di ba? Talagang mararamdaman mo kapag kinakanta niya. Tsaka iba, iba yung interpretation niya."

With the remastered edition released, Lani hopes that the new generation would also appreciate the song especially now where social media plays a huge role.

"I really hope that, you know, ang social media is really a powerful tool.

"And maybe nga, who knows, baka ngayon lang lumabas ang 'Bukas Na Lang Kita Mamahalin' and nailabas siya sa TikTok, it could you know, it could have been a different story all along 'di ba?

"Baka, you know, kasi ang, ang 'Bukas Na Lang Kita Mamahalin,' it has been there for, for so many years now.

"But it's been there for, you know, consistent lang siya na nandiyan siya, you know. Who knows, baka magkaroon pa siya ng dance version? I don't know."

SIMPLY 'THE NIGHTINGALE'

As "Bukas Na Lang Kita Mamahalin" begins a new chapter through its remastered release, Lani is also embracing a new phase in her career—one that sees her dropping "Asia" from her longtime moniker and simply going by "The Nightingale."

The decision traces back to her years performing in Las Vegas, where she realized that removing regional labels helped make her appeal more universal to audiences from different backgrounds.

Lani began her Las Vegas journey in 2004 after relocating with her family to the United States. She made history as the first Asian artist to headline a main showroom on the Las Vegas Strip, performing with Hawaii's Society of Seven at Bally's Las Vegas before later moving to the Flamingo.

During that period, she was billed as "The Siren of the Strip."

When she resumed performing regularly in the Philippines, she reclaimed the title "Asia's Nightingale." Now, however, she prefers the simpler moniker: "The Nightingale."

Explaining the reason behind the move, Lani said, "Yung sinasabi nating i-drop yung 'Asia' kasi nagiging parang, ano e, regionalistic, di ba?"

She recalled how audiences would often make assumptions about their shows in Las Vegas because of how they looked and were marketed.

"Parang kasi lahat, 'Asia, ay, Asian 'yan.' Parang, parang ganto lang. When we were starting to do the shows in Las Vegas, siyempre may poster kami, 'Lani Misalucha and Society of Seven.'

"So yun, lahat kami Asian looking, e. Tapos yung poster pa namin, ang itim namin. Alam mo yun? Tapos yung mga tao, siyempre, pino-promote namin yung show namin. Una sa Bally's Hotel and then Flamingo.

"Tapos yung mga foreigners, I mean, yung mga locals, mga puti o mga tourist na nanggagaling sa iba't ibang lugar, they would initially ask, 'Is there a show in English?'"

For Lani, dropping the word "Asia" was never about distancing herself from her roots. Rather, it was about allowing audiences to focus on the music first.

"Wala naman akong masama na ano sa pagtanggal. It's just that para maging very general lang, very organic lang, parang ganun.

"Para walang representation ng kung sino."

Interestingly, Lani revealed that she has actually been using "The Nightingale" for quite some time now.

Looking back, she believes the change ultimately benefited her career in Las Vegas.

"Ang pinakamaganda noon, katulad nun, somehow maganda na yung takbo ng show namin sa Las Vegas ano.

"Yung mga tao na ang nagpupunta because word of mouth. Hindi na nila ina-acknowledge yun na, 'Ay, mga Asians yan! Ay, Filipino yang singer!' Walang ganun."

By then, audiences were coming for the performance itself rather than focusing on nationality.

"Especially kapag nung lumipat na ako sa Hilton doon na solo ko nalang. Nadidinig nung mga ano namin mga prod people.

"Sometimes tapos na yung show then they would go to the bathroom. nadidinig nila, 'Oh, I think she's Amerasian. Oh no, I think she's ganyang ganyan.'

"Pero di nila nababanggit na Filipino.Yun yung time na yun na doon ko i-introduce na Filipino ako."

Overcoming life's biggest challenge

Four decades into a celebrated career, Misalucha said she remains grateful for everything she has experienced—both the triumphs and the setbacks.

When asked about the biggest challenge she has faced, the singer pointed to the health crisis she and her husband, Noli Misalucha, endured during the pandemic.

In October 2020, the couple contracted bacterial meningitis. The illness left a lasting impact on the singer, causing hearing loss in one ear.

Reflecting on that difficult chapter, Lani admitted: "I really have to be honest with you. It's pretty difficult to sing without the other ear."

Despite the permanent effects of the illness, the singer chooses to focus on what truly matters.

"But ang pinaka-ano nalang talaga dito is, you know, my husband and I are still alive.

"And, we still get to do what we love to do, you know... enjoy our grandchildren, and we get to still do a lot of, you know, fun things with, with family and friends."

For Lani, survival itself is already a blessing.

"So, yun lang masasabi ko na nagpapasalamat kami na okay pa rin kami. Yun naman yang importante."

She also believes challenges are a necessary part of life.

"Ang mga challenges na ganun, kasi yung challenges, iba-iba, di ba? Iba-ibang form. You know, it could be financial, it could be health, it could be medical condition, it could be family relationship or friends, di ba?

"But hindi magiging makulay ang buhay kung walang mga challenges."

Advice for the next generation of OPM artists

Having spent decades in the music industry and witnessed its evolution firsthand, Misalucha also shared some advice for younger singers, especially now that Filipino artists are increasingly gaining recognition on the global stage.

For the veteran performer, success starts with embracing one's gift while remaining grounded.

"I guess to just really embrace their craft... embrace their talent, and never, never forget to be thankful for everything that they're receiving."

She noted that fame and attention can sometimes distract artists from what truly matters.

"Kasi sometimes, you know, pag nao-overwhelm ka na sa, sa industriya, nao-overwhelm ka na sa attention and all that, sa spotlight and all that... minsan, siyempre, nadi-derail ka, you know."

Instead, she encouraged artists to focus on connecting with their audience through authenticity.

"So, try to focus on, you know, giving entertainment to your audience. And you know, to give a little piece of yourself to them.

ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW ↓

"Kasi it's, you know, ang audience, they will always feel special when, you know, when you share your little heart to them."

Above all, Misalucha said kindness should remain at the center of every artist's journey.

"Ang pinakaimportante sa akin is to, sabi nga nila, 'It's nice to be important, but it's also important to be nice.'"

She concluded with a reminder to never stop learning.

"So, siguro iyon ang mga ano ko, just really be, you know, just embrace their craft.

"Continue to learn, I guess. Never stop acquiring knowledge in, you know, in the industry. So, yun din ang siguro ang masabi ko."

After four decades in the spotlight, Misalucha's voice remains one of the most recognizable in OPM.

Whether as Asia's Nightingale, the Siren of the Strip, or simply The Nightingale, the singer continues to prove that longevity is not just about talent, but also resilience, gratitude, and an unwavering love for music.
