Up dharma Down has now released its follow-up album to Fragmented,
which was released way back in 2006. Now, the band is back in the recording
scene with its new 14-track album titled Bipolar.
"We were grateful to have any kind of audience at all," recalls
vocalist Armi Millare about their previous album. But luckily under the wing of
Terno Recordings, their unique mix of pop, post-rock, and electronic music was
well-received around the country, even reaching parts on the other side of the
globe.
"Each song here [in Bipolar] is different in character and story," says bassist Paul Yap. The group tried not to think of the sophomore slump curse. Instead, they focused on creating music they enjoyed playing. The end result is something familiar but different. "We like to think of it as a new first album," adds guitarist Carlos Tañada.
Up dharma Down launched Bipolar last Friday, October 24, at the Hexagon Lounge of the RCBC Plaza in Makati City. It also marked the release of 1,000 copies of a limited edition Bipolar CD designed by Ean Mayor and Everywhere We Shoot! It includes a DVD of On Either Side, a 40-minute documentary directed by Keith Tan, offering viewers a peek into how the album was made and some insights from the band members.
On Either Side is a 40-minute documentary that shows how Up Dharma Down completed their sophomore album, Bipolar. Away from the lights of the stage and the crowd in front of it, director Keith Tan encourages the band to open up. They share their struggles and principles in creating music. We also learn how distractions in the industry have made this young group more focused in their craft; where music shouldn't be compromised by any external cost.
With a non-linear approach, this documentary takes the viewer on an intriguing ride of words, music, and moving pictures. Presented in its rawest form.
