The Asian stage premiere of High School Musical stars MYXVJ and TV personality Karel Marquez as Gabriella Montez.
Karel, who previously starred as Belle in Atlantis Productions' staging of Disney's Beauty and the Beast, will be joined by a cast of 44, selected from over 250 people who auditioned last November. Among those playing featured roles are Shark Alonzo, Yen Morada, and Jaime Barcelon, who will play Troy Bolton, Sharpay Evans, and Ryan Evans, respectively.
This production of Disney's High School Musical is the officially licensed stage adaptation of the Disney Channel original movie, and is making its Asian premiere here in Manila.
A contemporary take on Romeo and Juliet, Disney's High School Musical tells the story of Gabriella Montez, a shy, studious new student at East High School who is forced to sing at a karaoke contest with Troy Bolton, the captain of the school's basketball team. After spending time with each other, both realize they share a passionate love for music and singing. But will they retain this love when their school is telling them they cannot be together?
With positive themes like the importance of expressing one's self, believing and following one's dreams, and with popular songs such as "Start of Something New," "We're All in This Together," and the mega-hit "Breaking Free," this new family-friendly musical is sure to be enjoyed by audiences of all ages.
This stage play, presented by Ateneo Blue Repertory and Little Boy Productions, is directed by Ms. Chari Arespacochaga of Trumpets and Atlantis Productions. Her previous directing credits include the Tony-award winning drama Doubt starring Cherie Gil, and Footloose starring Jay-R and Iya Villania. She will be joined by set designer Mio Infante, choreographer Dan Cabrera (of ABS-CBN's Pinoy Dream Academy), lighting designer Johnsy Reyes, and musical director Felix Rivera.
