People looking for a good way to get a beach-ready-body might want to try the Philippine Educational Theater Association's (PETA) Creative Dance Theater Workshop. It promises not only to help trim down unwanted fat, it also tightens your core and heightens creativity. Focused on exploring dance in an organic form, the workshop demonstrates the freedom of collective and individual creative expressions through movement—developing confidence in self-expression and communication through dance, teaching students to dance in and with various environments, with the use of costume and objects to manifest different symbolic elements.
As individual skills are honed, group skills are also cultivated by teaching the methods of compliment, contrast and unison in groups.
DANCE EXERCISES. The 20-day workshop curriculum integrates different dance forms, with emphasis on choreography, text interpretation, cutting space with the body, eight basic efforts and the various tools of dance: technique, design, rhythm, flow, and creativity—designed to develop rhythm, coordination and creative skills necessary in the art of making dances. Through dance exercises and combinations students develop strength, flexibility, posture, and balance that explore and hone the potential of the body and mind as tools for dancing and movement explorations.
The workshop will be facilitated by Edward Teraña, one of PETA's budding directors and acclaimed performance coach who is particularly known for his expertise in choreography and movement. The principles he teaches support and enhance all styles of movement from classical ballet to contemporary dance. Co-facilitating the workshop is Carlon Motabato, a dancer, choreographer for television and theater who trained under National Artist for Dance Ramon Obusan.
After the workshop, students walk away with the knowledge of body placement, technique and stage presence. All that, and a great physical work out as well!
Classes begin on April 21 and end on May 6, 2009. Other available workshops are Children's Theater, Teen Theater, Theater Arts, Basic Acting, Creative Musical Theater, Production Design and Creative Pedagogy (Theater-in Education). Classes will be conducted at the PETA Theater Center at 5 Eymard Drive, New Manila, Quezon City.
