Five contestants remain after a double elimination on American Idol.

Disco fever was this week's theme inAmerican Idol Season 8 . The Idol hopefuls tapped into their retro groove to leave a good impression of judges Randy Jackson, Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Kara DioGuardi.

This week's competition will also put an end to two hopefuls' chance for AI stardom.

First to conquer the stage is Lil Rounds with "I'm Every Woman." Randy disdainfully expressed: "it started so wild...what kind of vocal is that? I'm not sure." Kara ruefully added, "I kinda agree with Randy. Tonight, you still didn't tell me who you are as an artist." Simon even predicted: "I think this will be the last time we are going to see you."

Kris Allen belted out "She Works Hard for the Money" and impressed the judges. Kara was quick to note, "You took a risk with that arrangement and it paid off." Paula stressed: "You showed originality. You showed us why you are a contender in this competition. "

"September" was Danny Gokey's personal disco classic choice and rendered it in "Gokey" fashion. Kara commented, "You are incredible. Your pitch is so right on. Another solid performance from Danny." Paula told Danny, "You showed your agility and brilliance - one of the sexiest voices."

Allison Iraheta did a rock version of "Hot Stuff." For Randy, there were two things to comment - "I didn't like the arrangement. [And second] You are one of the best singers in the competition." Hard-to-please Simon simply said, "That was a brilliant performance. "

Adam Lambert did a sweet and soulful rendition of the classic disco tune "If I can't have You" and earned golden stars from the judges for his superb originality.

Kara exclaimed "Adam - You‘re brilliant! Every week you amaze [us]. It's just inspiring."

Randy expressed "Dude, you have it - major league going on."

On the other hand, Matt Giraud's R&B take on "Staying Alive" got mixed reviews. Simon said he "didn't like that performance. I didn't see any originality." Paula gushed "this was a strike. Tonight, you 'saved' your own life. You're staying."

Last to perform was Anoop Desai with "Dim all the Lights." Randy was not mesmerized with his performance. "Let me just say I didn't really love this." But for Kara, she felt otherwise. "Your best performance for the last two weeks."

During the elimination night, the contenders opened the show with a Jackson 5 number, "Shake Your Body" [Down to the Ground]" choreographed by AI Judge Paula Abdul. Guest performers included Freda Payne, Thelma Houston and K.C. and the Sunshine Band.

American Idol Season 7 runner-up David Archuleta mesmerized the crowd with his song "Touch My Hand."

The verdict was finally unleashed. It's official: it's the end of the line for Anoop Desai and Lil Rounds earned the lowest viewer votes.

Competition is now in full battle throttle for the Top Five contestants: Adam Lambert, Allison Iraheta, Kris Allen, Matt Giraud and Danny Gokey.
