Filipina actress Mercedes Cabral will appear in two competition films in the forthcoming Cannes Film Festival, which will take place in France from May 13-22, 2009.
She is cast in Brillante Ma. Mendoza's Kinatay (The Execution of P) as the wife of Coco Martin. This Filipino film is one of 20 entries chosen to compete for the prestigious Palme d'Or (Golden Palm) during the 62nd edition of the annual event.
Mercedes will also play a supporting role in the Korean film Thirst, which is also one of the 20 in-competition films at this year's Cannes Film Fest. Thirst is about a man of faith who turned into a vampire because of a failed medical experiment. The director, Park Chan-wook, also helmed the film Oldboy that won the Grand Jury Prize in the 2004 Cannes Film Fest.
To date, 52 films from 32 countries are scheduled to be screened in the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, with 46 of those world premieres.
Mercedes was introduced last year in the controversial film Serbis, which competed in last year's Cannes Film Fest. She was also paired with Coco Martin who has back to back films in Cannes as well.
She was given the title most beautiful among the actresses who graced the red carpet in the 61st Cannes Film Festival.
Mercedes will soon be seen in Alvin Yapan's Ang Panggagahasa kay Fe. This is one of the ten full-length finalists in the 2009 Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival that will take place at the Cultural Center of the Philippines by July.
