Tribute to Lino Brocka and Ishmael Bernal on June 2, Newdesk Cafe

Friends and admirers of Lino Brocka (left) and Ishmael Bernal (right) will pay tribute to the acclaimed directors at the Newsdesk Café in Quezon City.

Newsdesk Café, in cooperation with Image Guild Creative Services, pays tribute to two of the greatest filmmakers in the Philippine cinema, Lino Brocka and Ishmael Bernal, with Songs They Loved To Listen ToA Night for Direk Lino and Direk Ishma, on June 2 (9 p.m.) at the Newsdesk Café in Quezon City.

Lino Brocka is known for his films Tinimbang ka Ngunit Kulang and Maynila: Sa Kuko ng Liwanag, and many others. He helmed the first Philippine film to be shown at the Cannes Film Festival, Insiang. He also "discovered" stars like Hilda Koronel, Bembol Roco, and Christopher de Leon. Brocka passed away on May 22, 1991. A known activist during his time, he was given the National Artist for Film award in 1997.

Ishmael Bernal, a versatile director, worked for TV, movies, and for the stage. His major film works included Menor de Edad, Relasyon, and Working Girls I and II. He won various awards for his movies from Urian, Famas and the Catholic Mass Media Awards, and from some international award giving bodies. Some of his films were also shown in New York City in 1999. Bernal passed away on June 2, 1996.

The one-hour presentation will feature the Brusko Quartet led by Mario Palma (guitar), Jonathan Urbano (violin), and Manong Ernie (lead guitar). The favorite songs of Brocka and Bernal, as related by their friends and colleagues in the film industry, will also be showcased.

This event is surely a good way for these two great directors to be remembered fondly and merrily. Friends and fans of Brocka and Bernal are anticipated for this wonderful occasion.
