Six Part Invention fuses pop and ballad in Songs of D-Votion

Four-piece band Six Part Invention (SPI) fuses melodic love songs, R&B, and pop tunes in their latest album titled, Songs of D-Votion.

Following their self-titled debut record in 2006, which included the memorable ballads "All ThisTime" and "Only For You," Songs of D-Votion features 11 original tracks composed and arranged by lead vocalist and guitarist Rey Cantong. All songs are laid in the key of D, hence, inspiring the title.

Carrier single "Falling In Love" as sung by female lead vocals Kaye Malana is familiar to the ears. It has been getting a lot of radio airplay lately, thanks largely to ABS-CBN's hit primetime teleserye, Agua Bendita.

"Falling In Love" warmly paints a picture of budding romance, perfectly put into words with the lyrics: Never ending nights when I'm alone with you / A lifetime of dreams coming true / Nothing comes close to what we have right now...

The album opens big, but shaky with a techno dance song dubbed "The Club." It also finishes in the same low note with the pop-rock tune intriguingly titled, "Hallucination."

But the record finds strong footing in the emotional ballad tracks, which is really what this album is all about. Kaye's performance of "Never Letting Go" and "Better Than This" are memorable to say the least.

Rey brandishes his vocal prowess in "Til The End," "The Game," and "Waiting For Your Love."

Fifth track "Myn 11" is a short number embellished with a sweet guitar solo. The Tagalog songs, namely, "Pangarap na Mahal" and "Pagtatanong" complete the list of materials included on the record.

Almost all of the songs carry the topic of love, relationships, longing and moving forward. But there's also the impression that the materials were written in intermittent periods, something that Rey acknowledged in an interview with PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal).

"The first half of the album materials, ginawa namin almost a year ago pa," said Rey. "And then bago i-release, we rushed to record some more songs."

Also included in the CD is the official music video of "Falling In Love," plus four bonus tracks of piano and minus one versions of "Falling in Love"and "Pangarap na Mahal."

Completing the Six Part Invention roster are Tag Cantong (acoustic and electric drums) and Andy dela Cruz (bass).
