Nakatakdang maging speaker ang Filipino boxing champion at senador na si Manny Pacquiao sa Oxford Union sa November 5.
Ang Oxford Union ay kilalang debating society ng University of Oxford, ang prestihiyosong unibersidad na matatagpuan sa central Southern England.
Ang Oxford, na itinatag noon pang 12th century, ang pinakamatandang unibersidad sa United Kingdom.
Ang imbitasyon kay Pacquiao, 39, ay ipinaabot ni Oxford Union secretary Tom Brown mula mismo kay Stephen Horvath, Oxford Union President, ayon sa ulat ng Philstar.com.
Itinuturing na malaking karangalan ang imbitasyong ito para kay Pacquiao dahil mga kilalang personalidad at icons ang nagiging speakers ng Oxford Union.
Kabilang sa mga naimbitahan na rito sina Elton John, Michael Jackson, at Hollywood actors na sina Morgan Freeman, Clint Eastwood, Warren Beatty, at Johnny Depp.
Naging speakers na rin sa Oxford Union ang mga malalaking tao sa world stage: Albert Einstein; U.S. Presidents Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter, at Bill Clinton; ang missionary at santong si Mother Teresa; former UK Prime Ministers Winston Churchill at Margaret Thatcher; former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright; at dating U.S. Senator Robert Kennedy.
Sa kanyang pahayag, sinabi ni Horvath na ang pagdalo ni Pacquiao ay magpapatuloy sa “fine tradition” ng Oxford Union na mag-iimbita ng world leaders sa iba't ibang larangan.
Tinawag na “unmatched” ni Horvath ang tagumpay ni Pacquiao sa larangan ng professional boxing.
Si Pacquiao ang kauna-unahan at nag-iisang eight-division world champion at may hawak ng 11 world titles.
“Your strategic brilliance and your remarkable speed make you a truly legendary fighter. We would be delighted to hear more about how you stood above the characteristic trash-talking of big fights to stay focused on winning.
"You have applied this determination and endurance to your political career as well, overcoming an initial setback in your first election to become a widely-popular and respected Senator,” pahayag pa ni Horvath.
Sinabi rin ni Horvath na gustong marinig ng mga miyembro ng society ang sasabihin ni Pacquiao tungkol sa pulitika sa Pilipinas, lalo na ang kampanya ni Pangulong Rodrido Duterte laban sa ilegal na droga.
“At a time where there is such international interest in the politics of the Philippines, our members would be intrigued to hear more about your views on President Duterte and the war on drugs.
"On top of your success in politics and boxing, it is impressive that you are so involved in basketball as a player, owner and coach.
"We would be truly honored to host you and learn from your immensely rich life."
Inaasahan ding pagkatapos ng kanyang pagdalo sa Oxford Union, isusunod ni Pacquiao ang pag-anunsiyo ng napipintong laban niya sa American boxer na si Adrien Broner.
Pinaplantsa na umano ang negosasyon at inaayos na ang mga kontrata para sa sagupaang Pacquiao-Broner na tentatibong gagawin sa Las Vegas, USA, sa January 19, 2019.
Ayon sa isang source, wala pa raw katiyakan sa match, pero "90 percent sure" na raw ito.
