Ang former National Task Force against COVID-19 special adviser na si Dr. Tony Leachon ang isa sa mga hindi pabor sa libreng pamamahagi ng antiparasitic drug na Ivermectin nina Deputy Speaker Rodante Marcoleta at Anakalusugan Partylist Representative Mike Defensor sa Barangay Matandang Balara, Quezon City, noong Huwebes, April 29.
Sa eksklusibong panayam ng Cabinet Files kay Dr. Tony Leachon nitong Biyernes, April 30, sinabi nitong labag sa batas ang pamimigay ng mga produktong hindi nakarehistro at maaaring magdulot ng panganib sa kalusugan ng mga tao.
Pahayag niya, "It’s unlawful to prescribe and distribute unregistered products that can potentially cause adverse events and deaths with this illegal practice.
"Randomized controlled trials are needed to prove efficacy and safety of products before FDA approval.
"As doctors, we should adhere to the promise of the Hippocratic Oath, 'First do no harm.'"
Hippocratic Oath ang tawag sa oath of ethics ng mga manggagamot na iniuugnay kay Hippocrates, ang Greek physician na kinikilala bilang Father of Medicine.
Kabilang sa Hippocratic Oath ang “First do no harm” na nangangahulugang tulungan o huwag sasaktan ang mga pasyente.”
DEFENSOR'S DEFENSE
Tila patungkol kay Defensor ang pahayag ni Dr. Leachon dahil marami ang nabahala sa mga sinabi ng Anakalusugan Partylist representative tungkol sa kanyang ipinipilit na alternative treatment sa COVID-19 ang Ivermectin.
Paliwanag ni Defensor sa panayam sa kanyang ng miyembro ng media noong Huwebes, "Ang punto ko lang dito, bakit sila nagsasabi ng kung ano-ano pa? Ang dami nilang paghaharang tungkol dito?
"E, kung safe naman? E, kung hindi epektibo, e, di napurga ka? E, kung epektibo, nasagip mo ‘yung buhay?
"We should be proactive in this particular war.
"Kahit naman sinong doktor kausapin niyo sa Estados Unidos, wala naman sinabing aktuwal na gamot, e.
"Lahat sila subok! Laban kung papaano bubuhayin ‘yung mga pasyente."
Sa madaling salita, kontra ang mambabatas sa paniniwala ni Dr. Leachon at ng karamihan sa mga doktor.
Pero giit ni Dr. Leachon sa panayam ng Cabinet Files, "It shifts the focus from the proven products for COVID vaccines that will lead to herd immunity to re-open the economy to an unproven product offering false assurance and thus delaying management of mild COVID cases.
"Let’s use science based approach on our pandemic response: border control, mass testing, contact tracings, isolation, quarantine and vaccination."
DOH, FDA JOINT STATEMENT
Ibinahagi ni Dr. Leachon kagabi ang joint statement ng Department of Health at Food and Drug Administration tungkol sa paggamit ng ivermectin na pilit na isinusulong nina Defensor at Marcoleta.
Bahagi ng kanilang pahayag: "The Department of Health (DOH) and the Philippine Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today reiterated that the agencies DO NOT RECOMMEND the use of antiparasitic drug ivermectin for the treatment of COVID-19 due to insufficient scientific evidence.
"The DOH and FDA jointly emphasized that the agencies have always been consistent in their guidance to the public, and echoed to date, Ivermectin is not approved for the treatment of COVID-19."
