Nag-scuba diving si Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Christina Frasco noong April 12, 2023 sa Puerto Galera, isang sikat na dive spot sa Oriental Mindoro.
Ito ay para ipakitang "unaffected" ang dagat mula sa oil spill.
Matatandaang apektado ang turismo sa lugar dulot ng paglubog ng MT Princess Empress na may kargang 800,000 litro ng langis noong February 28, 2023 sa karagatan ng Balingawan Point, Naujan, Oriental Mindoro.

Nasa 12 sa 14 na munisipalidad sa Oriental Mindoro ang apektado ng oil spill.
Ayon kay Frasco, na siya ring chairperson ng Philippine Commission on Sports Scuba Diving, ang Puerto Galera dive site ay nananatiling safe.
Sa panayam ng media, hinikayat ng Tourism chief na suportahan ang turismo sa Puerto Galera, isang popular beach destination sa bansa.
"Notwithstanding the difficulties, the challenges, and the calamities this province has and is facing, the Philippines, including Puerto Galera and Mindoro continues to be a beautiful tourist destination.
“Napakaganda ng Puerto Galera. We are very hopeful that the message is sent across to everyone that they should come and visit Puerto Galera.”
Bukod sa white beach, sikat ang Puerto Galera dahil sa scuba diving spots nito na nagtataglay ng naggagandahang corals at iba pang yamang dagat.
Batay sa datos ng DOT, mula April 3 hanggang 10 ngayong taon, may kabuuang 18,757 turista na ang nakabisita sa Puerto Galera.
Pinakamarami ang nagmula sa China, South Korea, US, Japan, at Germany.

Bagaman at hindi pa nararating ng oil spill ang beaches ng Puerto Galera, may ilang 66 tourist attractions sa probinsiya ng Oriental Mindoro ang apektado, at mahigit 1,400 tourism workers na ang pansamantalang nawalan ng trabaho.
Namahagi rin si Frasco ng certificate of tourism grants sa mga lider ng community-based sustainable tourism organizations sa iba’t ibang lokal na pamahalaan ng probisniya.
Aniya, “We are here to give a certificate of training grants to our tourism workers to be able to offer them alternative livelihood that is not necessarily related to their present occupation but may offer work in the tourism industry nevertheless.
“And that includes agri-tourism as well as other skills related to tourism offerings.”

Magkakaloob ang DOT ng training programs sa mga apektadong tourism workers sa mga bayan ng Gloria, Pinamalayan, Naujan, San Teodoro, Pola, Bulalacao, Mansalay, at Calapan City.

Kabilang sa magiging pagsasanay ang farm tourism, urban farming, tourism micro-retail, beadwork and lei making, food tourism, kulinarya training, health and wellness tourism, hilot training, at maging basic haircutting training.
Ayon pa kay Frasco, “Magbibigay po tayo ng two million pesos for each affected LGU for any tourism-related project that will fall under the guidelines of the financial assistance of TIEZA [Tourism Infrastructure and Economic Zone Authority].”

Bukod sa kailangang matugunan ang krisis na hatid ng oil spill, ani Frasco ay dapat na matiyak na may mapagkukunan ng ikabubuhay ang mga residente.
“Ang that is why andito po tayo para po mabigyan naman po ng support yung ating local government units, yung ating mga tourism workers.”
Mahalaga aniya na maipabatid sa lahat na patuloy ang tourism offerings sa Puerto Galera.
“And on the other hand, andito po yung gobyerno para tumulong sa ating mga affected tourism workers in other parts of Mindoro.”
