Ang animated film na Iti Mapukpukaw (The Missing) ang aspiring entry ng Pilipinas para sa kategoryang Best International Feature ng 96th Academy Awards o Oscars.
Inihayag ito nina Manny Morfe (acting director general ng Film Academy of the Philippines), Direk Jose Javier Reyes at Direk Sari Dalena sa closing ceremony ng 3rd Philippine Film Industry Month nitong Setyembre 29, Biyernes sa Acacia Hotel sa Alabang, Muntinlupa City.
Ipinagpasalamat iyon ng direktor ng Iti Mapukpukaw na si Carl Joseph E. Papa. Kasama ni Direk Carl sa entablado ang producers na sina Direk Dan Villegas at Direk Antonette Jadaone ng Project 8 Projects, maging ang ilan sa animators ng pelikula.
Nagpasalamat si Direk Carl sa mga tumulong sa pagbuo ng pelikulang Iti Malukpukaw.
Pag-asam ni Direk Carl, “Sana, tuluy-tuloy pa rin po yung suporta kasi malayo pa yung tatahakin namin na journey to getting the film nominated.
“Sana, tayo yung pangatlong ma-nominate na animated feature dun sa... Ha! Ha! Sana. I can only wish for this.
“And thank you for recognizing our work, and this is a great recognition for all the animators here in the Philippines, na kaya rin nating gumawa ng maganda, original. Marami pong salamat!”
Ini-announce kapagkuwan ng Chairperson ng Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) na si Tirso Cruz III na bilang tulong sa Team Iti Mapukpukaw sa kanilang Hollywood campaign, bibigyan nila ito ng “a little stipend ikanga. We are giving out P1M para tulungan po sila… good luck, guys! And sabi nga nila, bring home the bacon!”
Napakaliit na halaga ng P1M, pero mabuti na yun kesa sa wala. Ayon kay Direk Joey, $2M ang kailangan para mag-lobby sa campaign para sa kategoryang Best International Feature ng Oscars.
“We were very realistic about it. Kahit gaano kaganda yung pelikulang Pilipino, battle of marketing yan, e,” pagmamatwid ni Direk Joey.
“It’s the battle of marketing, at saka sino namang producer ang mayroong $2M para ikampanya niya without any assurance na makakapasok ka?
“It really needs government support.”
Naku! Yung $2M, puwede nang ipam-produce ng malaking pelikulang Pilipino!
Tumango si Direk Joey, “Oo, oo, oo, pero hindi, e… Sinasabi nila, bakit ang ibang mga bayan, kahit maliliit, nakakapasok na ganun?
“Kasi, may long-range plan yan, e. May long-range plan sila. And yun ang nagiging problema sa atin, wala tayong long-range planning.
“Sabak tayo nang sabak nang sabak! Hindi, e. Korea took decades before they had Parasite which won the Best Picture and the Best Director.
“So we really need to look to the future and prepare for it right now.”
Si Direk Joey ang chairman ng Selection Committee. Ang mga miyembro ng komite na nagbakbakan sa mahigit dalawang oras.
Dalawang pelikula ang mahigpit na naglaban.

Napag-alaman ng PEP Troika na ang anim pang pelikula na pinagpilian ay Family Matters, I Love Lizzy, A Very Good Girl, About Us But No About Us, Ang Duyan ng Magiting, at Mamasapano: Now It Can Be Told.
Take note na kasama si Dolly de Leon sa cast ng Iti Mapukpukaw (with Carlo Aquino and Gio Gahol), A Very Good Girl (with Kathryn Bernardo), at Ang Duyan ng Magiting (with Bituin Escalante, Agot Isidro, Miggy Jimenez, Jojit Lorenzo, Frances Makil-Ignacio, Paolo O’Hara, Joel Saracho, and Dylan Ray Talon).
Tatlong award ang natamo ng Iti Mapukpukaw sa awards night ng Cinemalaya XIX: ilumiNasyon noong Agosto 13 sa PICC Lobby — Best Film, Best Supporting Actress (Dolly de Leon) at NETPAC (Network for the Promotion of Asia Pacific) Award.
Ito rin ang pinakamalakas sa takilya ng Cinemalaya 2023.
Anu-ano ang naging konsiderasyon kaya napili ang Iti Mapukpukaw na panlaban sa Oscars?
Pahayag ni Direk Joey, “Number one is the originality of the material. Number two is the largeness of theme, OK.
“And then number three is how Filipino it is, which can be translated into a universal message.”
Noong Setyembre 27, Miyerkules ng umaga nasabihan si Direk Antonette na yun ngang Iti Mapukpukaw ang aspiring entry ng Pilipinas sa Best International Feature category ng Oscars.
Kuwento ni Direk Antonette, “Natutulog pa nga si Dandan, e. Natutulog pa silang lahat. So, ang aga kong nalaman. Tapos, ginising ko si Dan.
“Tapos, yun yung unang beses ko siyang nakita na nung gumising… nang ginising ko, tumayo agad siya. Hahahaha!”
Paano niya sinabi kay Direk Dan?
Sagot ni Direk Antonette, “Parang ano lang, relax lang. Kasi baka masapak ako dahil galing nga sa tulog pero bigla siyang gising tapos pagkasabi niya, after that, ‘Kailangan na nating mag-meeting,’ nang umagang-umaga.
“So si Carl naman, tinawagan ko agad. Hindi siya halos makapagsalita.”
Na-inform na rin nila ang mga bida ng Iti Mapukpukaw na sina Carlo, Dolly at Gio, at handang sumuporta ang mga ito sa pagkampanya sa kanilang movie.
Lahad ni Direk Dan, “Sobrang thankful ako kay Chair saka sa FDCP na nagbigay sila ng P1M. Pero yun, we need all the help we can get.
“And I think it’s about meeting and working with the right people to actually get a chance at nomination sa Oscars.
“Sabi nga ni Tonette, hindi lang ito victory ng isang pelikula, victory ito ng isang buong industriya.
“So ayun, we’re currently looking for people to work with for the campaign, and for very nice people to meet. Hahaha!”

Naging kuwestiyonable ang pagkapili ng pelikulang Iti Mapukpukaw para sa Oscars.
Nasa alituntunin kasi, “An international film is defined as a feature-length motion picture (over 40 minutes) produced outside the United States of America and its territories with a predominantly (more than 50%) non-English dialogue track. Animated and documentary feature films are permitted.
“The country-selected film must be first released in the country of origin no earlier than December 1, 2022, and no later than October 31, 2023, and be first publicly exhibited for at least seven consecutive days in a commercial motion picture theater for the profit of the producer and exhibitor.
“In order for films to more easily meet theatrical exhibition requirements, the Academy will allow films to qualify outside the country of origin, provided the film is theatrically exhibited outside of the United States and its territories for at least seven consecutive days in a commercial motion picture theater for paid admission.
Submissions must be in 35mm or 70mm film, or in a 24- or 48-frame progressive scan Digital Cinema format with a minimum projector resolution of 2048 by 1080 pixels, source image format conforming to ST 428-1:2006 D-Cinema Distribution Master - Image Characteristics; image compression (if used) conforming to ISO/IC 15444-1 (JPEG 2000); and image and sound files packaged as Digital Cinema Packages (DCPs) in the ‘SMPTE DCP’ format. SMPTE DCP refers to SMPTE ST 429-2:2020 D-Cinema Packaging - DCP Operational Constraints and related specifications. (Blu-ray format does not meet Digital Cinema requirements.)”
Ang Iti Mapukpukaw, maging ang Ang Duyan ng Magiting, ay entries sa Cinemalaya 2023 na ipinalabas sa PICC at select Ayala cinemas.
Maikukunsidera bang commercial theaters ang meeting rooms ng PICC? Sa Ayala cinemas ay hindi seven consecutive days ang screenings ng Cinemalaya entries.
Kung pipilitin nilang masunod ang requirements nito, magagawa kaya nila yan agad-agad, dahil ang dinig ko sa October 2, Lunes na ito isusumite sa Oscars.
Oktubre 3, Martes, ang deadline ng requirements ng AMPAS (Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences), di ba?
Ihahabol na lang ba para makumpleto ang reuirements para maging eligible bilang Philippine entry?
Sana, ipaliwanag ito ng ng FAP. Hindi ko kasi napanood ang pelikulang ito sa Cinemalaya.
Naimpluwensya kasi ako sa iba’t ibang komento, kaya di na ako nagkainteres panoorin kahit nag-Best Film pa siya.

Ako, wala akong kuwestiyon sa pagkakapili ng Iti Mapukpukaw para maging official entry natin sa Oscars.
Mas comment at paglilinaw ito sa proseso hindi sa resulta ng pagpili. Kasi, tama nga ang sinabi ni Direk Joey Reyes na “Ask FAP regarding this matter, NOT the screening committee.”
Ang tanong sa FAP, kung maaari palang maisama ang mga pelikulang kahit wala pang 7 consecutive days ng commercial showing bago sila namili, bakit pala hindi nila nilinaw at nag-open submission na lang at puwede lahat kahit yung hindi pa naipapalabas at puwedeng ihabol na lang ang commercial screening?
Bakit hindi na lang pala hinintay ang October 31 na na-meet na lahat ng requirements ng Oscars eligibility bago inilahad ang kanilang pasya?
Well, I think FAP has to explain.
