Makakatulong ang local legislators sa pagpo-produce ng mga de kalidad na pelikulang Pilipino.
“A lot of legislators help us,” sambit ni FDCP Chairperson and CEO Jose Javier "Joey" Reyes sa mediacon noong Agosto 16, 2024, Biyernes, sa Kandle Cafe, Mother Ignacia Avenue, Quezon City.
“For instance, in the building of the new building of the Film Archives in Intramuros [Manila] where FDCP will move in.
“Ang nagpondo niyan, si Senator Padilla. Padilla, Robin, Robin. He gave PHP150M, OK. Pero kinulang yung PHP150M.
“So we have to raise extra funds, OK. And may mga tumutulong. Jinggoy [Estrada] is helping. Senator Jinggoy is helping.
“Kahapon lang, we were defending our budget, no, sa Lower House. Kay Congressman Toff de Venecia, OK.
“And very, very, very supportive naman sila.”

FDCP BUDGET HEARING
Kumusta ang preliminary hearing ng budget sa Kongreso?
“Lahat kasi ng controlled budget, na-slash, e,” pagtatapat ni Direk Joey.
“So kailangan, nagpapalimos kami dun sa… hindi nagpapalimos, naglalambing kami na madagdagan yung mga budget namin.”
Taun-taon ba ang pagre-request nila ng pondo?
Tumango ang multi-awarded scriptwriter-director, “Oo, oo. Every year yan, idya-justify mo. Talagang song-and-dance act iyan.
“Kahapon, muntik na lamang gawin ko yung routine ni Caloy, ni Yulo… gusto kong mag-triple twist, hindi ba?
“You have to justify your budget. And nakita naman nila iyong mga ginagawa ng FDCP which justify the increase in the budget.
“Lalung-lalo na yung… oh, isa naming ine-emphasize ngayon, yung restoration of films.
“Alam niyo, may good news. Pag tuloy na tuloy na, saka namin sasabihin sa inyo na mas maraming films ang mare-restore na natin.”

FILM RESTORATION
Ang mahal-mahal ng film restoration…
“Sobra! About PHP2M each na walang ROI iyon sa producer,” pahayag ni Direk Joey.
“Alam niyo ba na 40 percent of my movies are dead films. In other words, wala na. Wala na. I mean, nasa betamax na lang, or nasa VHS.
“Hindi mo na mare-restore dahil sira na ang negatibo. Wala nang existing print, OK. We don’t want that to happen.
“Inaano namin yan muna, iyong mga work ng National Artists. At hindi lang National Artists, ha?
“For me, one of my greatest dreams is the restoration of Temptation Island.”
Ang 1980 Regal film na Temptation Island ay idinirek ni Joey Gosiengfiao mula sa panulat ni Toto Belano.
Pinagbidahan ito ng beauty queens na sina Azenith Briones, Jennifer Cortez, Bambi Arambulo, at Dina Bonnevie.
Nasa cast din sina Deborah Sun, Ricky Belmonte, Alfie Anido, Domingo Sabado, Jonas Sebastian, Tonio Gutierrez, at Anita Linda.
Katuwiran ni Direk Joey Reyes, “Because Temptation Island is very much a part of the history of our cinema.
“Although it’s not done by a National Artist, it represents, OK, a significant trend in Philippine cinema.”

Marami-raming artista ang nasa Senado at Kongreso. Mas may tulong ba sila ngayon sa local movie industry, partikular para sa mga proyekto ng Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP)?
“In fairness, lalo na si Toff de Venecia, si Jinggoy Estrada, si Robin… si Richard Gomez and si Lani Mercado, they’re helping,” lahad ni Direk Joey Reyes.
“They are helping. Because they do realize na grabe yung budget cut. And you understand din kasi iba naman ang priority ng government, OK, hindi ba?
“Tapos alam niyo, noong nakita ko yung budget cut sa ibang agencies, sabi ko, ‘Oh, wow! Mas malaki pala yung budget cut nila.’ OK.
“So, you know, they are helping. They are helping, especially Toff and Senators Jinggoy and Robin.”
Paano sila tumutulong?
“Hinahanapan nila ng extra funding, OK. Naghahanap sila, nagbibigay sila ng insertion to add kung ano,” tugon ni Direk Joey.
“Like, ang problema namin next year is we need more budget to give more grants, OK. Kasi, ang dami. Ang dami!
“Lalo na iyang lintek na building na iyan! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!”
May tulong din ba mula pribadong sektor?
“We are, we are starting to explore doing that pero dito muna kami sa government,” pag-amin ni Direk Joey.
“Because we are directly under the office of the President. And another person who is greatly, greatly, greatly helping us is the First Lady.
“Oo, she is greatly helping us. I wish I can tell you but unless kasi andiyan na yan, saka ko lang ia-announce kung ano iyong tulong na ibibigay niya.
“But it has something to do with film restoration. Because she’s an advocate na nung ikinuwento namin, nung ikinuwento ko na 40 percent of my movies, wala na…
“Sabi niya, ‘Why?!’ blah-blah. Sabi ko, ‘Kasi ang mahal-mahal magpagawa…’
“Sabi niya, ‘Halika, ayusin natin iyan bago tuluyang mawala lahat yung pelikula.’”
Wala nang print ng Regal movies ni Direk Joey na Live Show (2000) at Makati Ave. Office Girls (1993).
“Hindi ba, noong kapanahunan, hindi naman yan ang priority ng Regal, e,” saad ni Direk Joey.
“Tapos kung naalala nyo, nagkasunog noon sa Valencia. So, andaming nawala.”
Dumalo si First Lady Liza Araneta Marcos sa launch ng 50th Metro Manila Film Festival noong Hunyo 16 sa Manila City Hall. Sign ba iyon na tumutulong si First Lady sa local movie industry?
“Oh yes. She’s helping, you know. I have the opportunity of being with her and talking to her,” sambit ni Direk Joey.
“She is helping but she wants it quiet. She wants it quiet, and she wants this to be part ng cultural program niya.
“She’s really excited. Kasi, iyung aming bagong building, hindi iyon FDCP Building, ha? It’s a film vault.
“Squatter lang kami roon. It’s the Philippine Film Archive Building, of which the FDCP is there, plus doon iyong bagong Cinematheque na gagawin.”

Ang kasalukuyang office ng FDCP ay nasa Cinematheque Centre sa T.M. Kalaw St., Ermita, Manila. Bakit sila lilipat sa Philippine Film Archive Building sa Intramuros?
“Dyusko, day! Nung Carina, pinasok kami ng tubig sa T.M. Kalaw!” natatawang bulalas ni Direk Joey Reyes.
“Nakahanap kami ng hito sa loob ng FDCP. Hindi kami nagbibiro, may hito! OK, na gustong manood sa Cinematheque. Ha! Ha! Ha!”
Hanggang first row ng Cinematheque Manila ang tubig noong Hulyo 24 na kasagsagan ng bagyong Carina.
Himutok ni Direk Joey, “Na-offend ako! Ang mga nahanap na isda sa La Salle sa Taft… koi. Bakit sa amin, hito? Hindi ba?
“Napakaano naman nito. Nakaka-offend, sabi ko. Bakit sa La Salle, koi fish ang nahanap sa quadrangle. Pero sa Cinematheque, hito?!”
Sa Hulyo o Agosto pa makakalipat sa Intramuros ang FDCP office.
Dagdag ni Direk Joey, “Lilipat muna kami sa Makati dahil kasi, pinapaalis na kami. I think magbi-breed na sila ng hito dun…
“Hindi! Babalik kasi dun yung Centro… ano yun? Instituto Cervantes. Babalik na uli sila dun. Building naman nila yun, e!”
4TH PHILIPPINE FILM INDUSTRY MONTH
Siyanga pala, pangungunahan ng FDCP ang pagdiriwang ng 4th Philippine Film Industry Month (PFIM) sa Setyembre, na ang tema ay “Tuloy Ang Tradisyon ng Pelikulang Pilipino.”
Pagpupugayan dito ang labing-isang National Artists for Film — Eddie Romero, Lamberto Avellana, Fernando Poe Jr., Nora Aunor, Manuel Conde, Marilou Diaz-Abaya, Ricky Lee, Lino Brocka, Ishmael Bernal, Gerry de Leon, at Kidlat Tahimik.
Ang opening ceremony ay sa Setyembre 1, Linggo, 3:00-8:00 P.M. sa Metropolitan Theater ng Maynila.
May special screening ang pelikulang Aguila (1980) na pinagbidahan ni FPJ, sa direksiyon ni Eddie Romero. Sa Setyembre 13, Biyernes, ang PFIM Gala Night sa Teatrino Promenade sa Greenhills, San Juan City.
Sa Setyembre 14, Sabado, ilulunsad ang Films for Peace sa Intramuros Centro de Turismo sa Maynila.
May screening ng pelikulang Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos (1976) na pinagbidahan ni Nora Aunor, sa direksiyon ni Mario O’Hara.
At sa Setyembre 27 ang PFIM Closing Ceremony sa Seda Vertis North, kung saan pararangalan ang tatlong buhay na National Artists for Film — sina Nora Aunor, Ricky Lee, at Kidlat Tahimik.
