Ang Sunday Beauty Queen ni Direk Baby Ruth Villarama ang unang full-length documentary na naging official entry sa Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF).
Itinanghal itong best picture sa MMFF 2016, at nagkamit din ng parangal para sa Gatpuno Antonio J. Villegas Cultural Award at best editing.
May jury prize din ito para sa Children’s Choice Award, kasama ang Saving Sally at Vince & Kath & James.
Sa mga sumunod na MMFF ay wala pang documentary na lumahok.

FIRST DOCU FILM IN CINEPANALO FILMFEST
Sa 2nd Puregold CinePanalo filmfest na gaganapin sa Marso 14-25, 2025 sa Gateway Cineplex 18, Cubao, Quezon City, kabilang sa walong full-length entries ang pinakabagong documentary ni Direk Baby Ruth na Food Delivery: Fresh from the West Philippine Sea.
Absent si Direk Baby Ruth sa mediacon ng Puregold CinePanalo 2025 nitong Enero 24, Biyernes, sa Artson Events Place, Roces Ave., Quezon City.
Ang representatives ng Food Delivery sa mediacon ay ang producer na si Chuck Gutierrez, at associate producer na si Therese Malvar.
Sabi ng actress-producer na si Therese, “We are so thankful to CinePanalo for believing in the project, and for giving us the opportunity to be alongside powerful narrative films bilang we’re the only documentary in this festival.
“Right now, Miss Baby Ruth, of course, she is currently in the sea. At dahil we’re proud to say that with the support of AFP and PCG, we are the first media to be allowed to join their mission and operation.
“That’s why she’s there right now in the middle of West Philippine Sea.”

Binasa kapagkuwan ni Therese ang logline ng docu: “Food Delivery captures the valiant efforts of the Filipino fishermen, the Philippine Coast Guard and the Navy to deliver desperately needed food to communities, all the while defending the livelihoods and the sovereignity of the contested West Philippine Sea.
“Each mission and each catch becomes a powerful testament to unity, sovereignity, and pride.”
Pag-asam ni Therese, “We hope that this film becomes a hope not just to the Filipino fishermen but also to all the Filipinos para ipaglaban yung nararapat para sa atin.”
Hindi nagbago ang tema ng Puregold CinePanalo filmfest na “Mga Kwentong Panalo ng Buhay.”
Nakatsikahan namin si Direk Baby Ruth sa closing ceremony ng 4th Philippine Film Industry Month noong Setyembre 27, 2024, sa Seda Vertis North, Quezon City.
Kuwento ni Direk Baby Ruth sa subject ng pelikula, “It’s about food delivery po sa West Philippine Sea dahil ang mga sundalo po natin ay nagbabantay po doon araw at gabi sa mga island features.
“Pag po inalisan kasi nila iyon, automatic na may ibang kukuha. So, bawal ang alisan.
“And pahirap na po nang pahirap ang pagde-deliver ng supplies doon. So it takes days, sometimes weeks, months before their food supplies get into them.
“So the story is really about them waiting and at the same time, how do they maintain to be fathers to their children, how do they maintain to be human beings despite the big responsibility on their shoulders.”
Pagmamatwid ni Direk Baby Ruth, gasgas na ang kuwento ng West Philippine Sea, nandiyan araw-araw, “pero there’s something to it na kahit gasgas, may mga nandun, e, na araw at gabi na nabubuhay at patuloy ang kanilang buhay.”
Natatakot ba siyang sumugod sa West Philippine Sea na any moment, magkagulo roon?
Umiling si Direk Baby Ruth, “Wala naman po. Wala naman po akong takot. Kasi I think, tayo, di ba, sumusugod tayo sa mga kuwento, parang buo yung loob natin.
“We’re called upon these stories. So, we have to be ready whether we like it or not.”

Mula pa noong nakaraang taon ay pinag-uusapan ang mga docu films.
Sa Cinemalaya 2024 last August, best film ang docu-fiction na Tumandok, na nakakuha ng four more trophies.
Ang docu na Alipato at Muog ay nagkamit ng Special Jury Prize.

Nag-special screening doon ang documentary na And So It Begins, bago ipinalabas sa mga sinehan noong Agosto 21.
Iyon ang isinumite ng bansa bilang aspiring entry sa best international feature ng 97th Academy Awards o Oscars. Ligwak iyon sa shortlist.

May special screenings sana ang docu na Lost Sabungeros sa Cinemalaya. Kinansela ang mga iyon for security reasons.
Naipalabas ang Lost Sabungeros sa 12th QCinema filmfest noong Nobyembre.
Dahil may kaso sa mga nawawalang sabungero, hindi pa puwedeng rebyuhin ng MTRCB ang Lost Sabungeros. Baka ma-sub judice.
