“I think the song has a life of its own,” sambit ng bokalistang si Jett Pangan sa mediacon nitong Enero 28, Martes ng hapon, sa Limbaga 77 restaurant, Sct. Limbaga St., Quezon City.

“From the time that we played it the first time back in 1989 — si Sushi [Atsushi Matsuura] pa yung gitarista noon — to this day, the reaction of the people through generations is the same.

“And I guess it boils down to the lyrics, e. 'Salamat' is a very celebratory song, bilang Pilipino we like to say thank you to a lot of things.

“Pag pumasa tayo sa exam, salamat, di ba? Pag tapos na yung summer at init, salamat, malamig na, di ba?

“Or pag nakauwi na tayo galing trapik, salamat.

"It’s such a celebratory word I think that applies to everyone.

“So, the high I get from singing that song ahh it never changed. Parang… we’ve been playing it like forever.

“There was one time we tried not to sing it and a riot broke out. So sabi namin, sige, hindi na namin uulitin ito. We just wanted to check it, e.

“Sa EDSA yun, e, remember. Sa may Greenfield. Actually it was my fault. Sabi ko, ‘Let’s experiment. Let’s see, what if we don’t sing Salamat?’

“I don’t know, the next thing, tables are flying… so, yeah, I guess people really wanna hear that song one form or another.

“Sa karaoke, when I drive home, I hear people singing it, you know. So, yeah, it’s a song with a life of its own.

“And to the performer, it doesn’t have to be me, but I guess anyone who wants to sing that song in the videoke or in their own cover band, I think they’ll get what I mean, it’s the energy of the song.”

NATIONAL ANTHEM OF THE DAWN

“That’s their banner theme, 'Salamat.' So I guess, you know, we nailed that one thankfully,” sabi ni Jett.

“From the beginning to the end, it’s just a build up of energy,” deskripsyon ni Jett sa "Tulad ng Dati" na pinakapaborito niyang kanta ng kanilang banda.

“And lyrically it can be a love song, can be a song about friends. Very universal. Very universal siya, and pag live, ang sarap kantahin.”

Kakayanin nila?

“Una, congrats sa Frontmen & Rock Chix. Ginawa namin ni Wency iyan, a couple of years ago with the Frontmen,” lahad ni Jett Pangan.

“Si Basti [Artadi], ako, si Dong Abay saka ako. Nag-Backstreet Boys kami. 'I Want It That Way,' with choreography.

“Of course, the choreography was a disaster but the performance was really, really fun.

“And ang nakakagulat noon, may isang tao roon na talagang siya yung nag-commandeer na ayusin namin yung number. Hulaan nyo kung sino.

“Hindi si Wency. Si Basti. He took it to heart and, you know, naengganyo kaming lahat."

"So, hindi malayong mangyari din sa amin na we come up with something.

“We have actually an OPM medley. Tinugtog namin nung nag-U.S. tour kami for the first time.

"It’s a collection of songs from Aegis, Father and Sons, and April Boy. Ginawa namin siyang medley.

“Not to make fun of it, please, NO. But to sing it in a different flavor. The way paano kaya yung kanta ni April Boy pag The Dawn ang gumawa, parang ganun.

“So it was a very interesting medley na we’re still, you know, improving to this day. We still wanna play it in other events.”

Sa mga kanta ng mga bagong banda o mang-aawit, ano iyong gusto nilang i-cover, o kantahin with their own flavor?

Natigilan muna si Jett bago sumagot, “Recently naging fan ako nung… well, kumbaga, johnny-come-lately ako dun sa album ng IV of Spades.

“Yung first album nila. Napakinggan ko yun during a lock-in taping somewhere in the province. Sa GMA din, I’m one of the actors there.

“Nung nag-break kami, pinatugtog lang yung buong IV of Spades album, dun ko lang na-appreciate.

“Na yes, alam ko sikat sila. Yes, alam ko magaling sila. Pero nung I was able to focus on their music one night, you know, wherever we were — dun ko nakita talaga na ang galing pala talaga nilang mag-areglo nung mga kanta.

“That I wouldn’t mind doing one song there. Kahit anong kanta dun! "Mundo," or whatever. Kumbaga, itatambiolo ko lang and I choose a song there, that would be it…

“Yeah. And also maybe personally, any song of let’s say si JK [Juan karlos Labajo]. Na tingin namin, babagay sa The Dawn. I wouldn’t mind giving it a shot.”

Tugon ni Jett, “There’s one particular song that I think it speaks to a lot of people now for whatever age group. We recorded this ‘90s pa, it’s a song called 'Abot-Kamay.'

“It’s from the Abot-Kamay album, yes. May cassette pa nun. And I think it will be featured also in the concert, to be sung by a special guest.

“If you haven’t heard the song, I would invite you to listen to it and maybe you’ll see what I mean na you know, it’s a love song that can be interpreted in so many ways.

“One unforgettable moment with that song was when were promoting it pa back in the ‘90s in a TV show. Tapos pinakanta alongside with us, si Ogie Alcasid.

“And at the time, Ogie was very popular, di ba? Up to now naman, he is. But there he was really like, you know, the voice of pop. Tapos kinanta niya yung kanta namin in a way that I’ve never heard sung before.

“To a point na sana, sh*t, ganda ng pagkanta ko dun sa recording. So, yeah, it’s a song that’s open to so much interpretation.

“And even from us, maybe we can do something to rework it, to make it sound more you know fresh to the young ears, yeah.”
