Ang tema ng summit ay “Navigating Our Future, Together.”

Noong Agosto 13, Huwebes, ay dalawang forum ang ginanap — “The Future of Asian Film Archives” at “Film Education Without Borders.”

Kapagkuwan ay nagkaroon ng mediacon kung saan panelists sina FDCP Chairman Jose Javier Reyes o Direk Joey, Lorna Tee (secretary general ng AFAN), Cheap Sovichea (deputy director ng Department of Cinema and Cultural Diffusion sa Cambodia), Chalida Uabumrungjit (director ng Thai Film Archive), at Tae Eun Kwon (manager para sa International Relations ng Korean Film Council).

CHALLENGES OF MOVIE INDUSTRY WORLDWIDE

Pahayag ni FDCP Chair Joey Reyes, “It started as early as 2017 when we saw the start of the decline of cinema viewing.

“As early as 2017, we feel the diminishing returns of cinema viewing, but after the pandemic and during the pandemic, that is when we really felt the blow.

“The complete draught of cinema viewing. And even though by 2021, we’re trying to recover, it never got back to the pre-pandemic level.

“And there are numerous explanations for that, OK. Firstly is the change of habits of people watching cinema.

“Whereas before part of the Filipinos’ life every weekend or even after work was to go watch a movie.

“But then, suddenly it got changed because they discovered the joys of streaming, OK, and there is also an economic implication brought by that.

“It is much cheaper to subscribe to a streaming platform than it is to pay for a single movie ticket.

“Plus the fact there is convenience in watching films at home. And then one very big factor is the fact that there is only a 100-day window between cinema exhibition and its migration to a platform.

“People have decided that there are certain movies you watch in a cinema, and there are certain movies you wait for to stream.

“This is a practical, logical response to the entire ecology of entertainment.

“Added to this, you have the joys of the internet. You have the joys of YouTube, you have the joys of all other alternative forms of entertainment.

“It was not only cinema that was affected, even commercial television was affected by this, OK. “Commercial television was greatly affected this.”

NOOD KA MUNA!

Hinaing ni FDCP Chairman Jose Javier Reyes: “How are we dealing with this? Lately, I was greatly misunderstood.

“When I said that, ‘Wait a minute, Spider-Man made PHP1.1B as of today. And The Odyssey made more than half a billion [pesos]. So what does this mean?

“‘I mean, is it the price of tickets? If you really wanna watch a movie, you’re going to make an effort to watch that movie.

“‘Because certain movies have to be experienced rather than merely viewed.’

“What was not included in my quotation was that it’s the challenge for our producers to realize that they cannot go back to doing the movies we were doing pre-pandemic.

“We have to up our ante. We have to up the game. It’s a risk indeed. It is a risk indeed because that would accrue much, much bigger production cost.”

DIREK JOEY REYES ON POSSIBILITIES

Pagmamatwid ni Direk Joey, “We have to expand our market. We cannot depend on just the local cinema market alone.

“We must be able to come up with global quality films. And that challenge is with the producers.

“You cannot question the choice of watching Spider-Man over a local movie because he who earns the money has the right to choose what movie he wants to watch.

“That is his hard earned money, therefore that’s his choice.”

Ngayong Agosto 17, Lunes ay may meeting ang FDCP at movie producers kasama ang Department of Trade at Bureau of Investments.

“Because they have to realize that this is a wake-up call!” bulalas ni Direk Joey.

“We just cannot keep on blaming the price of tickets alone. Because people will watch a movie if they watch to watch the movie.

“And PHP1.1B does not mean only the rich watched it, OK. In other words, it cut across the audiences because they saved to watch that movie.”

GORGY RULA

Sabi ni FDCP Chairman Jose Javier Reyes, as of August 13, Thursday, ay naka-PHP1.1B na sa takilya ng Pilipinas ang Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

“Ibig sabihin kasi, ayan pala yung pera, OK. Nakita natin. Na-misunderstand ako. Sabi, attitude,” paliwanag ni Direk Joey.

“And attitude is… hoy, teka muna! Medyo matauhan tayo doon sa mga pelikulang ginagawa natin, OK.

“Yung attitude is… hindi ka papanoorin kung hindi ka gusto. So, gumawa ka ng mga pelikula na gugustuhin nila.

“Alam mo, maganda pa nito is something that happened as early as 1974, OK. What changed the whole ecology of Philippine cinema?

Tinimbang Ka Nguni’t Kulang.

The bakya crowd.

“Pero noong ipinalabas yan ni Lino — mga college students, the middle class, they all started watching movies.

“And that ushered in 1976, the Second Golden Age [of Philippine Cinema], OK.”

Baby Ama (Terror of Muntinlupa); Lord, Give Me A Lover; Mortal; Bato sa Buhangin; Piknik; Inday Garutay; Mrs. Eva Fonda, 16; Fantastika vs. Wonderwoman; Mrs. Teresa Abad… Ako Po Si Bing; Kutong Lupa; Harabas con Bulilit; Divorce Pilipino Style; at marami pang iba.

Pagpapatuloy ni Direk Joey: “We need to be a little braver, you know, to veer away from formulas. To try something new.

“And the producers, to prove to the audience… they deserve the PHP300 or PHP400 na ibabayad nila, OK, di ba?

“Kasi, ibinaba nga ng ibang mga malls ang presyo ng Filipino movies, hindi pa rin pinanood. Ang tanong, bakit?

“So you have to be more creative. At saka you think global.

“Ang sinasabi ng marami doon, that means more cost. Yeah. But it doesn’t have to be extravagantly expensive.

“Look at How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies (2024). Walang CGI iyon, walang ano. Pero yung kuwento, mag-isip tayo ng ibang kuwento.

“At saka it’s not because of lack of talent. It’s because we don’t give ourselves to opportunity to try something new.

“Why the attitude of the Filipino? Because they will choose something which is worth their money.

“It’s a responsibility of the Filipino audience to learn to appreciate what is Filipino, but it’s also the responsibility of the Filipino creative to bring back the attraction to something Filipino.”
