Matagumpay ang 22nd edition ng Cinemalaya indie filmfest noong Agosto 6-18, 2026.
Tampok dito ang siyam na full-length films at dalawang set ng short films.
Topgrossers doon ang 2 Valid IDs ni Marietta Subong aka Pokwang; Status: Rejected ni Ruby Ruiz; ang psychological horror na Mag-iina; at ang queer drama na Tayo Lang Ang Nakakaalam.
Ang lima pang full-length films na nag-compete ay Hand of God, Ganggang, Kaka sa Yawan, Tirik, at A.Ni.Mal.
Meron pang tatlong full-length film na ipinalabas — ang opening film na Enjoy Your Stay, ang Philippine premiere ng 58th, at ang closing film na Filipiñana.
LOCAL AND FOREIGN FILMS SHOWING IN THEATERS
Noong nakaraang Miyerkules, Agosto 19, ibinalita ng Cinema Exhibitors Association of the Philippines (CEAP) na anim na pelikula ang nag-open sa local cinemas.
Dalawa sa mga ito ay gawang-Pinoy, ang HB2Me nina Elijah Canlas at John Arcilla, at Senior Moments nina Noel Trinidad, Tessie Tomas, at Nova Villa.
Ang apat na banyagang pelikula na nag-open last week ay Insidious: Out Of The Further, Kung Fu Soccer, Sacrifice, at End of Days.
Ngayong Agosto 26, huling Miyerkules ng buwan, mistulang may filmfest sa ating mga sinehan.
Dalawang pelikulang Pinoy ang nag-open today… ang Filipiñana ni Jorrybell Agoto, at ang Ang Pinakamasarap na Pares sa Balat ng Lupa nina Jerald Napoles at Pepe Herrera.
Exclusive ang Filipiñana sa SM Cinemas, partikular sa SM Megamall, SM Mall of Asia, SM North EDSA, SM Aura, SM Fairview, at SM Seaside Cebu.
Ayon sa CEAP, today rin ang opening ng Hope, One Night Only, Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie, A Southern Haunting, Meet Me at the Eclipse, The Dog Stars, at ng Harry Potter (all 8 movies).
“It's going to be a jampacked week… Bring your date, friends or the whole family... and have a grand time at the cinema!” bahagi ng Facebook post ng CEAP.
Kabilang sa Pinoy movies na nakatakdang ipalabas next month ang Saving Cherry sa Setyembre 2; Poon at Life After You sa Setyembre 9; EDJOP at Silenced Nights sa Setyembre 16; Plump Blossom sa Setyembre 23; at Always Yours, Never Mine sa Setyembre 30.
Of course, puwede pang magbago ang playdate ng mga ito.
Kaabang-abang ang makasaysayang National Cinema Day sa Setyembre 12, na ang tema ay, “One Industry. One Message. One Big Day.”
First time ito magaganap, at isang araw lamang ito!!!

Next month ang pagdiriwang ng 6th Philippine Film Industry Month (PFIM), na ang tema ay “Pelikula: Ginintuang Ikalawa (Philippine Cinema’s Second Golden Age).”
Punong-abala rito ang Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP), sa pangunguna ng Chairman at CEO na si Jose Javier Reyes aka Direk Joey.
Ang opening ceremony ay sa Setyembre 4, Biyernes ng 5:30 pm sa Red Carpet Cinema 1 ng Shangri-La Plaza, Mandaluyong City.
Dito ia-announce ng Film Academy of the Philippines (FAP) ang panlaban ng bansa sa 99th Academy Awards o Oscars.
TINIMBANG KA NGUNIT KULANG
Kasunod nito ang 6:30 P.M. screening ng restored version ng Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang (1974) ni National Artist Lino Brocka.
Kumpirmado nang dadalo rito sina Christopher de Leon at Laurice Guillen, na may kissing scene sa movie.
Maliban kina Christopher at Laurice, nasa cast ng Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang sina Lolita Rodriguez, Eddie Garcia, Hilda Koronel, Mario O’Hara, at Lilia Dizon.
Nandiyan din sina Rosa Aguirre, Alicia Alonzo, Joseph Sytangco, Ernie Zarate, Lorli Villanueva, Lily Miraflor, Joonee Gamboa, Mely Mallari, Estrella Kuenzler, at Anita Linda.
Prinodyus ito ng independent company na CineManila Corporation.
Bakit ang nasabing 1974 film ang napiling opening film ng 6th PFIM?
Pahayag ni Direk Joey sa mediacon noong Agosto 24, Lunes sa Cinematheque Centre sa Intramuros, Manila: “This film has a very personal importance in my heart.
“In 1974, Lino Brocka brought a very young Christopher de Leon to De La Salle University to promote Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang.
“Lino Brocka explained to the DLSU crowd the importance of this film he has created.
“Remember Lino’s first film, Wanted: Perfect Mother [1970], hindi ba, for Lea Productions?
“It’s a very commercial film that launched a very young Snooky Serna, Boots Anson-Roa, and Liza Lorena.”
Nasa cast din ng Wanted: Perfect Mother sina Dante Rivero, Gina Alajar, Ariosto Reyes Jr., Arnold Gamboa, Caridad Sanchez, Mary Walter, Eddie Mercado, at Etang Discher.
Dagdag ni Direk Joey, kabilang siya sa mga nakainterbyu kay Brocka noong 1974 sa DLSU.
“It was an hour-long interview and after that interview, I decided to become a scriptwriter,” pagtatapat ni Direk Joey.
“Because Brocka explained to me the importance of Philippine cinema.
“Before the time of Tinimbang…, ang mga nanonood ng pelikulang Pilipino ay yung mga binansagang bakya crowd.
“In other words, a La Sallite or an Atenean or anybody from the middle class or upper class college will not watch a Filipino film because it is bakya to do so.
“But when Tinimbang Ka… opened, it opened the eyes of Filipinos about the importance of Filipino movies, and what Filipino movies can be.
“Even though Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang was shown in 1974, it opened the gateway to the Second Golden Age [of Philippine cinema].”
Makalipas ang dalawang taon, ipinalabas ang mga pelikulang Pilipino na obra maestra.
Kabilang diyan ang Itim ni Mike de Leon, Insiang ni Lino Brocka, Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos ni Mario O’Hara, Minsa’y Isang Gamu-gamo ni Lupita Aquino-Kashiwahara, Ganito Kami Noon… Paano Kayo Ngayon? ni Eddie Romero, at Nunal sa Tubig ni Ishmael Bernal.
Ang mga 1976 classic films na ito ay ipapalabas next month sa FDCP Cinematheque Centers sa Inteamuros (Manila), Iloilo City, Davao City, at Bacolod City.
“It only took two years because of Brocka’s Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang!” bulalas ni Direk Joey.
“So we decided that we are going to open this year’s PFIM with the film that resurrected Philippine cinema.
“And right now, considering the state of Philippine cinema, we need another Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang.
“We need another movie like this which will bring back the honor and dignity, and the respect of audience for Philippine cinema.”

Setyembre 1975 ginanap ang 1st Metro Manila Film Festival, kung saan walong pelikula ang kalahok.
Nagwagi ang Diligin Mo ng Hamog ang Uhaw na Lupa sa mga kategoryang Dangal ng Bagong Lipunan o best picture, best director (Augusto Buenaventura), best actor (Joseph Estrada), best supporting actor (Vic Silayan), best editing (Edgardo Vinarao), at best sound (Manuel Daves).
Ang best actress ay si Charito Solis para sa Araw-araw, Gabi-gabi, at ang best supporting actress ay si Nida Blanca para sa Kapitan Kulas.
Nang sumunod na taon ay inilipat sa Disyembre 25, araw ng Pasko, ang umpisa ng filmfest.
Tinawag itong 1976 Filipino Film Festival.
Kabilang sa sampung entries nito ang Ganito Kami Noon… Paano Kayo Ngayon? ni Eddie Romero, Insiang ni Lino Brocka, at Minsa’y Isang Gamu-gamo ni Lupita Concio.
Nakaanim na tropeyo ang Ganito Kami Noon… Paano Kayo Ngayon? — best picture, best director, best actor (Christopher de Leon), best screenplay, best music, at best art direction.
Nakaapat na tropeyo ang Insiang — best actress (Hilda Koronel), best supporting actor (Ruel Vernal), best supporting actress (Mona Lisa), at best cinematography.
Nakadalawang tropeo ang Minsa’y Isang Gamu-gamo — best editing at best story.
Nang sumunod na taon ay tinawag nang Metro Manila Film Festival ang nasabing filmfest, at humakot dito ng pitong tropeyo ang Burlesk Queen ni Celso Ad Castillo.
Wagi ang Burlesk Queen sa mga kategoryang best picture, best director, best actor (Rolly Quizon), best actress (Vilma Santos), best supporting actor (Joonee Gamboa), best supporting actress (Rosemarie Gil), at best screenplay.
Nakadalawang awards ang Mga Bilanggong Birhen, best cinematography at best art direction.
Sa anim na 1976 classic Filipino films na ipapalabas next month sa mga FDCP Cinematheque Centre, tatlo ay kalahok sa 2nd MMFF or 1976 Filipino Film Festival.
