Ali through Messenger nitong Enero 16, Miyerkules ng hapon, “The role of social media and its potential influence on suicide-related behavior is a relatively new and evolving phenomenon that society is only beginning to assess and understand.

“The emerging data regarding the influence of the Internet and social media on suicide behavior have suggested that these forms of technology may introduce new threats to the public as well as new opportunities for assistance and prevention.

“Those administrating suicide prevention and outreach public health campaigns must also stay current with social media trends and user preferences, as well as pertinent legal issues.

“Ultimately, proactively using social media to increase public awareness of and education on mental health issues is a logical modern public health approach that can potentially save lives.”

NOEL FERRER: I just had a meeting with my friend Ricky Liboro, who was former financial planner and media person din dati.

Ali, “Holding it all in is like a soda bottle being shaken and shaken until one day it will inevitably pop.

“This, in psychological terms, is called an emotional emergency. Different people experience different ways of expressing this build-up of stress and tension.

“For some it’s anger, others turn to alcohol, drugs, smoking, undereating, overeating, panic attacks, self-harming. The smallest incident can be the straw that breaks the camel’s back.

“It's not always easy to define why some people are having suicidal thoughts. But again talking to a professional helps.

“Remember: There is help. There is hope. You are not alone. This is not how your story has to end.

“The person who completes suicide, dies once.

“Those left behind die a thousand deaths, trying to relive those terrible moments and understand … Why?”

JERRY OLEA: Nalathala sa PEP News noong Marso 18, 2018 ang interbyu ko kay Tetchie Agbayani kung bakit ang mga taga-showbiz ay “more prone to depression.”

Pahayag ni Tetchie sa presscon noon ng Kapuso series na Contessa, “Kasi ang actors, ang buhay nila, they do a good project, they get so much accolade. Ang daming papuri.

“So from being high, feeling on top of the world, 'tapos sa susunod na buwan wala kang trabaho, depress-depress ka naman...”

GORGY RULA: Ang sabi ng Hollywood actor na si Robin Williams (nag-suicide noong Agosto 11, 2014), “ALL IT TAKES IS A BEAUTIFUL FAKE SMILE TO HIDE AN INJURED SOUL AND THEY WILL NEVER NOTICE HOW BROKEN YOU REALLY ARE.”

Pahayag ni Dra. Ali, “Can a suicidal person mask their depression?

“YES, they can and sometimes do.

“But we can all be more aware of the signs and symptoms of depression to help those we care about get the necessary treatment to relieve them of their pain.

“Plus, because many people who are depressed can not see their symptoms, we have to be their eyes and ears for them to help SAVE their life.

“Many people suffering from depression and even contemplating suicide hide their feelings and appear to be happy just prior to their suicide attempt.

“This often confuses the people around them since for so long they had been suffering and appearing depressed, then all of a sudden seem better.

“However, most of the time a person who is suicidal will give clues as to how desperate they feel.

“It is critical that you familiarize yourself with the symptoms of depression and the warning signs of suicide.”
