Just like other first-time moms, Sam Pinto had her own share of childbirth and pregnancy struggles.

On Saturday, October 9, 2021, the 31-year-old actress-entrepreneur took to Instagram to share her birthing story.

She also opened up about the challenges she encountered days before welcoming their first baby.

Sam and her husband Anthony Semerad welcomed their baby girl, Mia Aya, on September 1, 2021.

In her post, Sam said one of the first things she needed to do before she delivered her baby was to get an RT-PCR COVID-19 test.

She wrote, "I was 40 weeks and 3 days pregnant when we decided to check in the hospital.

"First thing needed to be able to be admitted is a negative RT-PCR test that’s valid for 7 days. Did a home service with @medesteticaph 3 days before I gave birth."

PREGNANCY CHALLENGES

Sam then talked about three main challenges she encountered days before she gave birth to Baby Mia Aya.

The actress said she developed pregnancy hypertension, which almost prevented her from having a normal delivery.

The first-time celebrity mom wrote, "We wanted to go for a normal delivery as much as possible—which I did.

"But there were some issues that can make me have an c-section like I was pre eclampsia — for some reason I developed hypertension during my pregnancy even if I think that’s the healthiest I’ve ever been.

"Maybe cause my mom also was pre-eclampsia."

According to mayoclinic.org, preeclampsia is a pregnancy complication which usually begins after 20 weeks of pregnancy. It is characterized by "high blood pressure and signs of damage to another organ system, most often the liver and kidneys."

Sam also faced two other issues: she had a low-lying placenta, while Baby Mia Aya was smaller than her gestational age or the number of weeks of pregnancy.

But over time, she was able to overcome these two challenges.

She recounted, "Secondly, Mia was small. When I was 36 weeks pregnant, her size was 32 weeks. Had to drink this special vitamins and in 2 weeks, her size was perfect.

"Lastly, my placenta was low for the longest time. It’s suppose to go up early on the pregnancy. But mine took its time.

"Finally on my 36th week, it went up. Oh if it doesn’t go up, I would have to do a c-section cause it’s blocking the birth canal."

SAM'S CHILDBIRTH EXPERIENCE

Sam revealed that she was alone when she delivered Baby Mia Aya.

The couple both decided for Anthony to return home instead of waiting in the hospital to lessen the risk of being exposed to COVID-19.

Sam wrote (published as is), "Anthony helped me check in and then went home.

"I didn’t really want him to stay in the hospital and wait in the fathers area so he won’t be too exposed.

"I was nervous and felt like floating and the anticipation was just overwhelming. Since it’s my first baby, I didn’t know what to expect.

"But I was already feeling some weird throbbing and didn’t know that was already contractions and was in the first stage of labor.

"I was alone the whole time — honestly I didn’t mind.. at least no pressure. Had my phone with with me to keep me entertained.

"Plus I was on epidural so I kept dozing off."

Like Sam, Anthony also had to do an RT-PCR COVID-19 test three days before the delivery. Having a negative test result allowed him to be present at the birth and to stay with his wife and their baby after the procedure.

Sam continued, "Finally after 16 hours, Mia was ready to come out. And Anthony was able to enter the delivery room (Oh he also needed a RT-PCR test that’s valid for 3 days to be able to be with me in the delivery room and stay with me after giving birth).

"After 3 pushes, she was out! Anthony cut her umbilical cord. Stayed in the hospital for technically 3 days. 1 day for labor and 2 days recovery room."

Armed with a first-hand experience of what it's like to give birth, Sam paid tribute to all mothers towards the end of her post.

She wrote, "Everything about giving birth is so intense. But my body is made for this. Thank you to all doctors and nurses and salute to all the mommas [emoji]"
