Before entering showbiz, Janine Gutierrez thought female celebrities were tied to a singular look.
“I thought if you’re a girl artista, you always have to wear dresses and your hair always have to be nakalugay, nakakulot. Yung typical artista look,” the Kapuso actress said during the launch of Preview’s Best Dressed for 2017.
Janine was among the ten ladies chosen for this year.
But thanks to her encounter with fashion photographer BJ Pascual, the stylists, and makeup artists, Janine realized that fashion was limitless.
“You don’t have to fit in to a certain mold.
“You can just kind of do whatever makes you feel good.”
“SPUNKY” FASHION STYLE. Unlike the “typical artista look,” Janine prefers donning unconventional looks.
“I really enjoy wearing suits, makeup that isn’t so pretty…”
When it comes to her personal style, the 28-year-old daughter of Ramon Christopher and Lotlot de Leon describes herself as “more spunky” and “more carefree.”
But she doesn't fancy herself as someone brand-conscious, even though she's been wearing designer labels recently.
Janine remarked, “When I was in college, I really couldn’t afford to buy anything.
“So I learned to be super resourceful like using a skirt as a top or borrowing clothes from my friends and we mix and match, shopping in the ukay.
“I don’t think it really matters if your clothes are branded.
“It’s how you wear it.”
Instead, Janine’s closet was filled with “old clothes” or “hand-me-downs” from her mother and her grandmother Pilita Corales.
“I love old clothes!” she said, “Especially from my lola, from my mom…
“[My lola] always brings me clothes, 'tapos suwerte lang kasi because we’re the same size din ng shoes.
“So yung mga luma niyang shoes, luma niyang bags, ako yung nakakapag-recycle.
“I really think [old clothes] bring like another layer to whatever you’re wearing.”
Her favorite piece from her grandmother’s collection?
“Yung pinakarecent na binigay ng lola ko.
“Isang bali blazer na malaki na puwede maging dress, with the gold buttons na uso nung '80s!”
