Shaina Magdayao has revealed having her share of health complications due to hypothyroidism.
It has come in the form of allergies.
According to endocrineweb.com, Shaina's condition means that she has an underactive thyroid gland, which means the gland can’t make enough thyroid hormone to "run the body's metabolism," causing her metabolism to go slower.
Recently, the actress had an allergy attack while taping for The Better Half.
"I guess I can blame it on my really heavy role, plus my hormonal imbalance caused by my hypothyroidism," she told PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) and Cinema News during her series' finalé presscon on August 24.
“There were manifestations, in the form of allergic reactions.
“It was probably triggered by on-the-job stress, which isn't really a bad kind of stress.
“But see, I'm taking my job seriously now more than ever.
“I've really learned to love my role [as Camille] and the show as well, so that's probably what caused those manifestations."
TREATMENT. While most health websites say hypothyroidism is completely treatable with a hormone pill, its appropriate dosage per patient varies.
Shaina has been religiously seeing her doctors, a "great team of specialists, immunologists who've been taking good care of me."
She elaborated, “When they see the allergic reactions, they advise me to slow down.
"But I guess, we can't really avoid it."
So far, "I feel much better now."
In addition to her pill, "I've also tried taking alternative medicine, including acupuncture.
“I just don't have much time to do yoga, but so far that has helped a lot."
And the most important aspect of her treatment: changing her lifestyle.
Though she has not fully embraced it yet, the younger sister of Vina Morales sees to it that she goes to "sleep early and try to work out and take care of my health."
Shaina muses, "I just realized that I should take better care of my health since I've been working since a really young age.
"And maybe I just don't realize it, but the physical neglect is probably catching up on me now.
“It just so happened that, since the start of this year, I've had a lot of work commitments that overlapped.
“That was the time we were doing the pilot for The Better Half, and I was doing the movie.
“That's why I've decided to take a break from ASAP first, so that I could at least have Sunday off."
NEW PROJECTS. But unlike her The Better Half co-star Denise Laurel, who's planning to take a short leave to have a breast cyst removed as soon as their TV series ends, Shaina says she'll be much busier.
"After my last taping for Better Half, I have to fly to Singapore to do a movie.
“Although I want to rest, I can't afford to. I can't say no to all these wonderful blessings and opportunities being given to me.
"I'm flying to Singapore to do a movie with Direk Lav Diaz for the second time around this year.
“This is for the movie of Ma'am Charo [Santos-Concio]. I think she's there already, and she'll be shooting there for ten days.
"As soon as I get back, the next day, we'll fly to Siargao for the event that my foundation is organizing.”
Shaina and SMILE Cares Foundation have been raising funds for the construction of an eco-camp in a two-hectare lot in Siargao that will provide agricultural training for out-of-school youths.
She says excitedly, "We're finally working with UPLB [University of the Philippines Los Banos].
“They're the experts, and they're gonna test the soil. They'll determine what plants are suitable for growing there for their community."
"Then, when I get back from Siargao, there's this new project.
“I consider this my early birthday gift—an unexpected surprise that I got last weekend."
Shaina will be turning 27 on November 6.
The Kapamilya star continues, "With all these wonderful blessings, I promised to visit Father Pio on my birthday just to give thanks for the really productive second quarter that I had this year.
"The past three weeks, I stopped attending to my businesses and meetings.
“I decided to concentrate on Better Half. I don't think my body can take it.
"For sure, the blessings will be a great help to my recovery, that's why I'm looking forward to working."
Almost to assure Dreamscape, the ABS-CBN unit which has been giving her projects, that she is healthy and can be part of a new show, Shaina ends with: “I'm looking forward to being reunited with Dreamscape again..."
