As electricity costs remain a major concern for many Filipino households, comedian Jayson Gainza has become one of the latest personalities to question the amount reflected on his family’s Meralco bill.

On Saturday, June 28, Jayson shared a photo of their billing statement on social media after receiving an electricity bill totaling PHP17,845.79.

But instead of expressing frustration, the comedian used humor to make his point.

Addressing Meralco directly, he wrote (published as is): “Dear @meralcoph Kami po ay walang laundry shop, wala din po kaming talyer at lalong lalo na wala kaming 4 na swimming pool paki explain papano nyo ito na compute ng ganito kalaki."

His tone then took on a hint of sarcasm, subtly taking aim at Meralco, the country’s largest private electric distribution utility, serving 39 cities and 72 municipalities.

“Baka naman pag nagsolar kami maging 12k na lang kuryente namin aba aba baka lalo kayong yumaman!”

While the comedian did not provide additional details about the household’s monthly electricity consumption, his post echoed the sentiments of many consumers who have recently taken to social media to question soaring electricity bills.

Offhand, based on Meralco’s computation, its share of the total bill is only about 12%—which goes to the distribution charge, the fee it collects for building, operating, and maintaining the system that delivers electricity to homes and businesses.

The bulk of the cost goes to power plants and suppliers, the transmission operator, and government taxes.
