The COVID-19 pandemic is testing the leadership of a new breed of politicians known as the "millennial mayors."

Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto is the poster boy of this team of young politicians whose brand of governance shines though in this time of crisis.

They are quick-witted, transparent, consensus oriented, accessible, and responsive.

Youthful and having the It factor, they have the savvy to put the power of social media to good use.

Donya Tesoro, the young mayor of San Manuel, Tarlac City, is all of the above.

She embraces the term "millennial mayor" for what it stands for.

For her, the term connotes a "fresh take" on governance.

She told UNTV in an interview last June 11, "Napakaganda po talaga na, sa panahon ngayon, marami po tayo mga millennial mayors.

"Kasi napakarami nating mga panibagong ideya na i-share sa ating mga kababayan.

"Lalo't-lalo na ngayon, during this time of pandemic, we need to be creative."

Donya has been using social media as a tool to stay in touch with her constituents, keeping them informed especially during the Luzon-wide enhanced community quarantine that lasted from March to May 2020.

Donya has been a politician since she was 21 years old.

She graduated with a degree in Communication at Miriam College before running in San Manuel for city councilor and then for vice mayor.

To strengthen her background in governance, Donya earned her Master's Degree in Public Management at the Ateneo De Manila University.

Why she became a public servant

Donya originally wanted to become a journalist, but the call to become a public servant proved stronger.

She said in an interview with CNN Philippines in July 2019, "I realized that when you're in public service, you tend to make an impact more on a larger scale," the millennial mayor said

"It's really fulfilling when you are part of the change that is becoming in this country."

Her father was the former mayor of San Manuel, but Donya said it was her own choice to pursue politics.

As she said during her guest appearance on Eat Bulaga! last June 27: "Wala naman pumilit sa akin.

"Talagang ginusto ko din kasi nakikita ko din iyong father ko before, ito ginagawa niya.

"Ako din, I myself, napalapit ako sa mga tao."

Love life not a priority

Donya has said she is "married to the job," fully understanding that her work as mayor can be so demanding it leaves her no time for romance.

Donya said in her interview on Bottomline last March 9. "First year mo, adjust ka.

Second year, doon ka pa lang makakagawa. Third year, nagpe-prepare ka na for elections. So, talagang no time for love,

"Three years lang, e. Kaya palagi ko lang iniisip na 'I'm married to this job.'"

What is an ideal man for Mayor Donya?

She said during her appearance on Eat Bulaga!: "Ako kasi, hindi ako particular sa looks, e. Basta hindi babaero.

"Siyempre iyong maiintindihan niya iyong trabaho ko. Maka-Diyos."
