Smartphones keep getting faster, smarter, and more capable with every release.

New features arrive almost every year, while social media fuels the idea that everyone needs the latest device to keep up.

For many people, that pressure can be difficult to ignore.

For actress, host, and content creator Gabbi Garcia, however, upgrading isn’t about chasing every new gadget. It’s more a matter of need than trend-following.

In an exclusive interview with Philippine Entertainment Portal (PEP.ph) during the Xiaomi 17T Series launch at SMX Convention Center Aura in SM Aura Premier on May 29, Gabbi Garcia shares a perspective that feels increasingly relevant in a culture driven by upgrades and constant online comparison.

THE FEATURE SHE WISHES EVERY PHONE HAD

Smartphones today can zoom farther, process faster, and capture moments with remarkable detail.

Yet when asked what feature she still hopes to see in future devices, Gabbi points to something that has less to do with hardware specifications and more to do with the overall online experience.

"'Cause everything's, like, really so updated now. Um, ano nga ba? Siguro for me, yung maka-cancel lahat ng negativity online na phone. Yung you can, like, easily curate your phone na i-ba-block niya lahat ng negativity, yung automatic na ganun. Para, like, it will be more peaceful, and it will be also better for our mental health."

Her response reflects a growing conversation around digital wellness.

Smartphones have become extensions of daily life.

They connect people to work, entertainment, and communities.

They also serve as gateways to endless streams of content.

For Gabbi, the next big innovation may have less to do with hardware and more to do with creating a healthier online experience.

The idea feels particularly timely as more users look for ways to manage screen time, filter harmful content, and protect their mental well-being while staying connected.

WHY UPGRADES MATTER IN HER LINE OF WORK

Although Gabbi encourages people to avoid unnecessary pressure when it comes to gadgets, she acknowledges that upgrading can be important depending on a person's needs.

"To upgrade my phone, my line of work kasi is really required for me to create content. So I feel like I constantly have to adapt to the changes of the phone. Lalo na it's aligned also with my work, and it also helps me as a content creator, especially if I have a phone that can power me through."

Smartphones are no longer just communication tools.

They function as cameras, editing stations, content management hubs, and business tools all at once.

This context aligns with the experience of many digital creators who rely heavily on mobile devices to produce content on the go.

NOOD KA MUNA!

The newly launched Xiaomi 17T Series reflects this direction, introducing Leica-powered imaging features such as the Leica 5x telephoto camera and Leica Live Moment.

These tools are designed to capture not only a single frame but also the movement and emotion surrounding it.

THE MINDSET SHIFT PEOPLE NEED

As the conversation shifts to gadget culture, Gabbi addresses the pressure many people feel to constantly upgrade their devices.

"I feel like make do of what you have. And also, at the same time, people think that you have to have, like, a professional camera, a mirrorless camera, but they don't realize that some of the great content creators are actually just using their phones."

Fact: many creators continue to produce high-performing content using smartphones rather than high-end equipment.

When asked about what she prioritizes when choosing a gadget, Gabbi keeps her criteria simple.

She says, "I really consider na it's very functional and very user-friendly kasi for me it shouldn't be that complicated."

For audiences navigating constant upgrade culture, Gabbi’s perspective offers a reminder that technology should support daily life rather than define it.

New devices can be helpful, especially for work and creativity, but its value still depends on how they are used.

In the end, her message circles back to a simple idea.

Making the most of what is already available can be just as meaningful as moving on to something new.
