Luis Manzano admitted that nothing could have really prepared him for the news about the passing of box-office director Wenn Deramas.
They went back a long way since Direk Wenn convinced Luis to try acting in the Kapamilya teleserye Kampanerang Kuba in 2005.
The Kapamilya TV host-actor related, “Nung ako kasi, in denial muna ako, e.
“Nalaman ko nung 8 A.M. [ng Monday]
“Kaya kong ipagpaliban nung nakuha ko yung text.
“Sabi ko, ‘A, okay. Unfortunately, patay na si Momski. Okay, ganun talaga buhay.’
“Pero by 11 A.M., umiiyak na ako sa kwarto.”
PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) and two other reporters caught up with Luis on the second night of Direk Wenn’s wake at the Arlington Chapel in Quezon City.
Luis recalled that the last time he saw Direk Wenn was when they graced the premiere night of Star Cinema’s Everything About Her, where his mom Vilma Santos was one of the lead stars.
The two were even sharing a few laughs before the movie started.
The 34-year-old TV host-actor recalled, “Yun yung binayaran pa niya yung tubig na in-order ko.
“Umorder ako ng tubig pero naiwan ko pala yung wallet ko. Totoo yun!
“Sabi niya sa akin, ‘Ang dami mong shows, singkwenta [pesos] wala ka!’
“Siya nagbayad ng tubig ko.
“Kaya sana, Momski, kung nasaan ka man, huwag mo na ako singilin!”
When asked if Direk Wenn gave him any love advice at the time, Luis replied, “Wala, e. Hindi namin napag-usapan yung mga pangyayari nung huli kaming nagkatabi sa Everything About Her.
“Hindi namin napag-usapan yun [love life].
“Pero I’m sure kung kinakailangan ko ng advice, si Momski would be more than willing.
“Kahit anong pagod, kahit anong puyat, bukas ang pinto ni Momski para sa akin.”
But if there’s anything that he learned from Direk Wenn, Luis said that it’s the box-office director’s strong work ethic.
“Wala siyang advice na ibinilin talaga o sinabi.
“Pero sa kanya ko na-observe kung paano mahalin talaga yung craft.
“Nakita ko kung paano siya maging leader sa mga tao.
“At hindi ka puwede maging leader na ganun kung hindi mo mahal ang ginagawa mo,” Luis concluded.
Luis arrived together with his best friend Anne Curtis at Arlington chapel around 8:30 p.m.
It can be recalled that Luis and Anne worked with Direk Wenn in two movies (Ang Cute Ng Ina Mo and Who's That Girl) and two teleseryes (Kampanerang Kuba and Dyosa).
At 10:30 p.m., Luis left with good friend Alex Gonzaga right after their joint interview with the entertainment reporters.
He didn't cross paths with ex-girlfriend Angel Locsin, who arrived at the Arlington chapel at 10:38 P.M.
