Singer-songwriter Sam Smith is engaged to fashion designer Christian Cowan after nearly four years together.
The Grammy winner confirmed the engagement during an interview with The New York Times, where they casually referred to Cowan as their fiancé while discussing the upcoming album, “Hazel Eyes.”
Although Sam did not share details about the proposal or wedding plans, the revelation marks a new milestone in the couple's relationship, which first became public in 2022.

The engagement also offered fans a glimpse into the inspiration behind Sam's next musical chapter.
According to the singer, the upcoming album, “Hazel Eyes,” which is scheduled for release on August 21, 2026 takes its title from Cowan's eye color and draws heavily from their relationship.
Speaking with The New York Times, Sam reflected on writing love songs as a queer artist.
"For me, there's something radical about being queer in this time, in this world, and singing love songs," they said.
"I'm not going to allow the poison that I read and that I see to affect my way of loving," said Sam who identifies as non-binary and uses "they/them" pronouns since 2019.

Sam has also described “Hazel Eyes” as the most personal album of their career.
The 34-year-old artist said the project took more than three years to complete with a close group of collaborators, allowing them to document the lessons they learned through love.
"This record and this music is incredibly romantic," they said in a statement announcing the album.
"I've learned so many life lessons through making this album, and I've documented it all through the music."
Sam added that the album's lead single, "My Guy," was a song they had "been waiting a lifetime to write," describing it as a celebration of finally experiencing love that is fully reciprocated.

Relationship timeline
Sam and Cowan first sparked dating rumors in late 2022 after they attended a White House celebration marking the signing of the Respect for Marriage Act, where the former performed.
The couple later made their official red carpet debut at the 2024 Met Gala, wearing coordinating custom outfits designed by Cowan.
The matching ensembles featured metal-plated roses inspired by one of the first gifts Cowan had given Sam early in their relationship.
Since then, Cowan has continued designing several of the musician's looks for major public appearances, including this year's Met Gala.
The designer previously described one of his custom creations for Sam as "a love letter" to his partner.
