Kinilala ng gobyerno ng Amerika si Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto bilang isa sa 12 International Anticorruption Champions sa mundo.

Sa ilalim ng bagong administrasyon ni United States President Joseph Biden, inilunsad ni Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken ang International Anticorruption Champions Award “to recognize individuals who have demonstrated leadership, courage, and impact in preventing, exposing, and combating corruption.”

Ang 31-year-old Pasig mayor ang kaisa-isang Pilipino sa 12 key players sa iba’t ibang larangan “who fight for accountability, transparency, the rule of law, and press freedom.”

Sa official statement na inilabas ng U.S. Department of State nitong Martes ng gabi, February 23 (Miyerkules ng umaga, February 24 sa Pilipinas), kinilala si Mayor Vico bilang “standard-bearer for a new generation of Philippine politicians who prioritize anticorruption and transparency initiatives in their election campaigns and in office.”

Bukod sa tinalo ang isang “incumbent mayor whose family had ruled the city for 27 years” noong 2019—bilang isang 29-year-old councilor—binanggit ng U.S. State Department ang “freedom of information legislation” na isinulong ni Mayor Vico noong konsehal pa lamang ito.

“NEW, MORE TRANSPARENT APPROACH TO GOVERNANCE”

Ayon sa U.S. State Department, nang maupo sa puwesto si Mayor Vico, pinanindigan nito ang reputasyon bilang “fresh voice with a new, more transparent approach to governance.”

Inisa-isa ng gobyerno ng Amerika ang mga repormang ipinatupad ng local executive sa lungsod laban sa kurapsiyon at katiwalian.

“He pledged to avoid any kickbacks in the awarding of city contracts, established a 24/7 public information and complaints hotline, formally involved civil society organizations in the city’s budgeting and policy making, and mandated that the value of all city government contracts be reduced by at least 10 percent – a measure intended to reduce bribery in the contract awarding process,” anang U.S. State Department.
