The Cultural Center of the Philippines' (CCP) facade was bathed with yellow lights from Thursday, June 24, 2021, to Friday, June 25, 2021, as a tribute to the late former President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino.
In a statement posted on its official Facebook page, CCP announced that they would temporarily pause their Pride Lighting event until Friday night to honor the late president.
The full statement reads: "Yellow lights cloak the facade of the Cultural Center of the Philippines as the nation mourns the passing of former President Benigno Simeon 'Noynoy' C. Aquino III.
"The Center, along with its community of artists, creatives, and production staff, expresses thoughts of comfort and condolences to the grieving family, and to the Filipino nation.
"The CCP pauses its Pride Lighting event to pay tribute to and honor the departed 15th President of the Philippines.
"The Main Building lights up in yellow, the symbol for freedom from dictatorship and reinstating democratic institutions, until June 25, from 7pm to 10pm.
"The Pride Lighting encores on Saturday, June 26 to 30, 2021."
In the local political landscape, yellow has long been regarded as the thematic motif of the Aquino family, since the days of the 1986 EDSA revolution up to the present.
Drawing inspiration from the 1973 Tony Orlando hit tune, "Tie A Yellow Ribbon 'Round The Old Oke Tree," the 'yellow movement' became a symbol of protest against the Marcos dictatorship during the mid-'80s.
It reached its peak with the assassination of former Senator Benigno Aquino, Jr., who became the rallying figure behind the 1986 EDSA-People Power Revolution.
Former president Noynoy died "peacefully in his sleep" on Thursday morning due to his renal disease secondary to diabetes. He was 61 years old.
