Nais lamang daw magpakatotoo ng senatorial aspirant at abogadong si Luke Espiritu na pabor sa abortion, same-sex marriage, at divorce.
Noong Miyerkules, Marso 9, 2022, nakapanayam si Atty. Espiritu ni Karen Davila sa programang ANC Headstart.
Ipinaliwanag ni Espiritu na naniniwala siyang "abortion should be decriminalized."
Pahayag niya, "Women's Day was yesterday. Poor women in our country have died by abortions done in an unhealthy environment or through unhealthy methods.
"They have exercised their choice over their own bodies, as to what they want to do with their bodies, which is also tied to the future... If they had decided based on taking care of their own future and even the future of whatever family they're gonna create.
"If they had children that will be born into poverty, so that's even more tragic."
Karapatan daw ng isang babae kung tingin nito ay mas makabubuting ipalaglag ang batang nasa sinapupunan.
Paliwanag pa ni Atty. Espiritu: "Sometimes society has predetermined what a woman should choose.
"We have controlled women’s bodies for too long since the ancient time. And we have values dating back to the middle ages, controlling women's minds, controlling women's bodies, telling women when to reproduce, what to think, what to wear.
"Women should decide. I don’t consider abortion murder. I consider it as the choice of women over their own bodies.
"I am a man, what right do I have to tell a woman what to do with her body? Ang katawan ng babae, hindi iyan makina na anak nang anak.
"Yung reproductive health nila, dapat may control sila."
ESPIRITU: I AM NOT A "TRAPO" WHO'S "INSINCERE"
Ipinunto ni Karen na tila si Atty. Espiritu lang ang nag-iisang abogado tahasang magsasabing suportado nito ang abortion, same-sex marriage, at divorce.
Depensa ni Espiritu na isang practicing litigation lawyer, wala siyang magagawa kung hindi iyon tanggap ng ibang tao.
"I am not trapo. At the risk of losing votes, I will not compromise on principles," diin ng senatorial candidate.
"Others [candidates] will perhaps agree, but they will try to mitigate what they will say. They're gonna say, 'I'm just for civil union.'
"But then it's a half-hearted statement. It is pandering both to those who are pro and to those who are con.
"If you want people to behave like trapos who are insincere and are not clear in their stances, it's up to you.
"I will definitely stand by my convictions no matter what."
NOT IN FAVOR OF A MARCOS PRESIDENCY
Umingay ang pangalan ni Espiritu sa social media dahil sa mainit na pakikipagsagutan niya kina Larry Gadon at Harry Roque sa senatorial debate ng SMNI.
Sina Gadon at Roque ay parehong nasa ticket ni presidential aspirant Ferdinand Marcos Jr., habang si Espiritu ay bahagi ng partido ni presidential aspirant Ka Leody de Guzman.
Sa debate, tahasan niyang kinondena ang diktadurya ng yumaong Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos Sr.
Hindi rin niya sinusuportahan ang kandidatura ng nakababatang Marcos, na aniya ay bukas sa pagsasabing nais nitong ibalik ang "the so-called golden age" na sinimulan ng ama.
"It was not a golden age. He's gonna bring back the type of governance that his father did.
"And what is that? That is disrespect of human rights, that is tendency towards authoritan rule, that is towards more supression and repression of the struggling workers of the struggling poor.
Bukod sa pagiging abogado, isa ring labor leader si Espiritu na nagtapos ng kurso sa Communications at abogasya sa Ateneo de Manila University.
Advocate siya ng working class at naniniwalang dapat matigil ang "elite rule."
"We want a humane society wherein society does not take care of the top one percent, the wealthiest; but takes cares of the interest of the majority."
