It took eight years for Moana (2016) to make waves again on the big screen, and the wait was absolutely worth it.

Forget the early talks of turning Moana 2 into a Disney+ series.

While that may have slowed down the sequel’s progress, it’s clear the time was spent crafting a stellar production where everything feels like a version 2.0.

Here’s why Moana 2 deserves the spotlight:

MOANA 2: Main Characters

Moana is back, with more depth, maturity, and strength.

Now 19, compared to her 16-year-old self in the original film, her character’s evolution is remarkable.

Her journey across the far seas of Oceania, driven by a call from her ancestors, is more adventurous and life-changing.

Maui, voiced by Dwayne Johnson, retains his bashful charm, but has become less clumsy, less flighty, more heroic version of himself.

And then there’s Moana’s younger sister, Simea, who is absolutely adorable—you’ll want to pinch her cheeks!

What truly stands out is the animation: the characters’ facial expressions are so refined and lifelike they could rival real actors.

MOANA 2: Music

When I heard Lin-Manuel Miranda wouldn’t be returning, I had my doubts.

Could anyone top “How Far I’ll Go” and “You’re Welcome”?

Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, Grammy-winning composers of The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical, deliver a score that exceeds expectations.

Their songs perfectly complement the scenes, elevating both the emotions and tone to new heights.

"We're Back" is a catchy opening anthem, blending environmental, cultural, and human elements into a powerful harmony.

Moana’s voice, reprised by Chloe Auli'i Cravalho, is more emotive, with a flexible range that shines in "Beyond" and two stand-out duets.

And don’t miss the end credits: the Filipino version of the movie's theme song "Anong Daratnan" performed by Belle Mariano is a spectacular treat.

Moments and Movements

The storytelling is nearly seamless, with the few slower moments redeemed by captivating music and aesthetics or delightful character antics—with Heihei the rooster deserving a mention.

The breathtaking effects and animations make it impossible to look away.

From the majestic waves to the vibrant marine and island life, each visual element in the sequel is amplified in scale and beauty, delivering jaw-dropping moments.

Verdict

I’m glad Moana 2 became a movie instead of a series—it’s a cinematic triumph that justifies the long wait.

Packed with emotion, stunning visuals, and great music, it’s destined to make another big splash just like its predecessor.

It's directed by David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand, and Dana Ledoux Miller, and produced by Christina Chen and Yvett Merino.

It will open in cinemas on November 27, 2024. Don’t miss it!
