Ipagdiriwang sa Pilipinas sa kauna-unahang pagkakataon ang National Hopia Day.

Tatlong araw itong magaganap, mula Hulyo 19 hanggang Hulyo 21, 2024, sa Music Hall ng Mall of Asia, Pasay City.

Ang magkakapatid na Gerik, Gerald, at Roche Chua—na fourth generation ng Eng Bee Tin—ang mga punong-abala sa idaraos na National Hopia Day, isang pagdiriwang sa hopia na itinuturing na simbolo ng Filipino-Chinese heritage.

Ang hopia ang pangunahing produkto ng Eng Bee Tin, ang 112-year-old company na pinamumunuan ni Gerik sa kasalukuyan.

“From its humble beginnings as a Chinese immigrant food to its status as a Filipino cultural icon, hopia's journey reflects the rich tapestry of cultural exchange and innovation.

“That’s why we feel that the time for hopia to be celebrated in a grand manner has long been overdue,” paliwanag ni Gerik tungkol sa desisyon nilang ideklarang National Hopia Day ang Hulyo 19.

NEW HOPIA FLAVORS

Ipinagmalaki ni Gerik na anim na klase na bagong flavors ng hopia ang libre nilang ipatitikim sa lahat ng dadalo sa unang araw ng National Hopia Day.

Saad niya, “Parang piyesta ang mangyayari. Isa sa mga ipinagmamalaki ng Eng Bee Tin, palaging may bago. Meron kaming anim na mystery hopia na ilu-launch.

“Mga kakaibang flavors na hindi maiisip ng mga tao na puwede palang gawing hopia.

“Magkakaroon din kami ng Filipino special flavors ng hopia na kakaiba dahil puwedeng maging ulam.

“Nagawa na namin ang mga mystery hopia so you have to be there to find out.”

Ang nakababatang kapatid ni Gerik na si Roche ang finance manager ng sikat na hopia brand.

Ayon sa kanya, “We will tell the story of hopia using the National Hopia Day as backdrop. We will honor the stories woven into each bite.

"We will pay tribute to the enduring bonds of family, our shared culture, and the comfort of its familiar flavors.”

Ikinuwento naman ni Gerald, head ng manufacturing department, na isang matagal nang plano na ngayon pa lamang matutupad ang National Hopia Day.

“Na-realize kasi namin, bakit may Donut Day, may National Ice Cream Day. Bakit wala tayong Filipino product na maipagmamalaki ang ating mga produkto at kultura?

“Kumbaga, nandiyan na siya pero hindi masyadong naipo-promote kaya naisip namin na gumawa ng National Hopia Day.

“At the same time, ipakilala uli ang hopia sa younger generation. Hindi lang yung alam nila na may negative connotation na, 'Ay, na-hopia!' [umasa].

“Yung hopia symbolizes family, togetherness. Isa yon sa motivation namin sa Eng Bee Tin bilang innovators ng hopia sa Pilipinas, to create National Hopia Day."
