Details about her family background and upbringing were largely kept private, consistent with how she chose to live much of her life outside pageantry and show business.

Even at the height of her popularity, she maintained a relatively low-profile personal life, with limited information shared about her immediate family or childhood.

EDUCATION

Sara earned a degree in Speech and Drama from the University of the Philippines Diliman, completing her studies while churning the demands of being a beauty queen.

Her time at the Diliman campus coincided with her reign as Binibining Pilipinas Universe.

In a tribute following her passing, the UP College of Arts and Letters recalled how she “famously balanced the crown of Binibining Pilipinas Universe with the demanding life of a scholar” during her years at the university.

The college further described Sara as “a woman who understood that beauty was a platform, but intellect was the foundation”—a distinction that reflected both her academic discipline and the way she carried herself outside of the klieg lights.

Sara also revealed in one of her stints onstage that she was a member of UP Simbuyo, an organization inclined to community outreach. She herself explained that the word “simbuyo” means “outburst of emotions.”

She detailed: “In this organization, I, as part of the organization, was able to help the charitable institutions, and we go to provinces.

“We also bring some medical practitioners, and we try to help in our own little way.”

She and cager turned comedian Benjie Paras were college sweethearts. At the time, Benjie was the star player of UP Maroons.

CAREER

Bb. Pilipinas-Universe 1989

Pageant followers often recall Sara Jane’s iconic banter with TV host Randy Santiago on the coronation night of Bb. Pilipinas-Universe 1989.

When Randy asked then 21-year-old Sara about her Spanish-speaking skills, the young beauty queen politely obliged, but with comedic flair.

Even though Randy only wanted her to translate “Randy, you're so good-looking and so handsome‚” Sara went the extra mile and added a cheeky comment about his shades, which the actor is known for.

The exchange offered the public a revealing glimpse of her quick-thinking, spirited, and unflappable personality.

She went on to represent the Philippines at Miss Universe 1989, held in Cancún, Mexico. Although she did not advance to the semifinals, Sara was noted for her stage presence and articulate responses during interviews.

Post-pageantry

Following her reign, she pursued work as a commercial model and later became part of Batch 3 of the Professional Models Association of the Philippines (PMAP), before gradually stepping away from the public eye.

Outside of modeling, she made occasional television appearances, including a 2024 guest spot on the game show Family Feud alongside her husband and family members.

PERSONAL LIFE

Sara as a wife and mother

Low-profile as she was, Sara Jane Paez was never fully removed from public memory, and pageant followers still catch her on public endeavors.

She was married to businessman Nicky Santiago, and together they raised two children—Sarina and Alessio—both of whom eventually built their lives abroad.

Her rare return to television in January 2024, when she appeared on the GMA-7 game show Family Feud came as a welcome surprise.

Appearing alongside her husband, sister, and brother-in-law, Sara revealed that she joined the program at the urging of her children.

“The reason why nandito kami ngayon kasi sabi ng mga anak ko, ‘Mom, you have to do it!’”

During her brief appearance, she also related how the family made it a point to see each other and get together at least twice a year.
