Electricity is a fundamental lifeline for many Filipinos.

It powers household appliances, enables remote work and online schooling, preserves food, and keeps families connected.

Because reliable electricity is essential to daily life, Filipino households continue to prioritize paying their monthly utility bills—even amid tight budgets and rising living costs.

However, blackouts do not only happen due to disconnection.

Widespread power interruptions often occur during severe weather events, monsoon rains, and typhoons that damage distribution infrastructure.

When the lights go out unexpectedly, knowing what to do, what to check, and who to call can make all the difference.

HOW TO CONTACT MERALCO

When an emergency outage occurs, reporting the issue promptly ensures faster restoration.

The Manila Electric Railroad and Light Company (Meralco) operates several 24/7 customer service channels designed to address technical emergencies such as power outages, electrical hazards (e.g., fallen lines, sparks), and service interruptions.

The hotline and "contact us" channels also entertain account-specific concerns such as billing complaints and payment inquiries.

SOCIAL MEDIA

First is Meralco’s Facebook Messsenger channel, which can be accessed on the electricity service provider’s official Facebook page.

You may also send a message to its official X and Instagram accounts

TEXT SUPPORT

Second, the customer can send a text message to the following numbers: 09209716211 for Smart subscribers and 09175516211 for Globe subscribers.

HOTLINE NUMBER

Third, the customer can also call it’s official hotline number, 16211, and its hotline for business accounts, 16210.

MERALCO APP

Fourth is the My Meralco App, which can be installed from the App Store for iPhone users, or from Google Play for Android users.

The most important detail is the Customer Account Number (CAN), found at the top-right portion of the printed bill.

This unique identifier allows Meralco’s customer service team to quickly locate and verify the customer’s account.

Meralco also advises the customer to find out more information about the power interruption. It is wise to check neighbors' homes first.

NOOD KA MUNA!

Look outside to see if neighboring houses are also dark or if streetlights are out.

An isolated outage affecting only one house often points to a tripped circuit breaker inside the property, whereas a street-wide blackout indicates a main distribution line issue.

Then the customer can try to identify visible hazards from a safe distance.

Look for fallen tree branches on wires, sparking transformers, or leaning poles.

Reporting exact observations, such as a sparking transformer near a specific landmark, allows dispatchers to prioritize emergency repair crews effectively.

WHAT TO DO WHILE YOU WAIT

While Meralco crews work to repair lines and restore power, taking basic precautions indoors protects household appliances and ensures family safety.

One, customers should disconnect televisions, computers, routers, air conditioners, and refrigerators from wall outlets.

Sudden power surges when electricity is restored can overload and damage unprotected circuits and ruin sensitive appliances.

Two, keep a single light switch turned on, as a quick signal once power returns.

Three, try to avoid opening the refrigerator door. An unopened refrigerator keeps food cold for roughly four hours, while a full freezer can hold its temperature for up to 48 hours.

Four, it is also advisable to use battery-powered lights—flashlights, solar-powered lamps or rechargeable lanterns—to avoid causing fires from candles and other open flames.

Five, monitor official advisories from Meralco to be updated about restoration schedules.
