Neri's controversies
- Video scandal
An intimate video of Chito and Neri went viral on YouTube on August 3, 2013, after the lead singer claimed his hard drive had been stolen.
- Libel charge
A regional trial court issued an arrest warrant against Neri Miranda and former ABS-CBN road manager Danilyn Nunga for libel charges under Republic Act No. 10175, the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.
Judge Ricky Jones Macabaya of RTC Branch 5 in Cebu City instructed the Quezon City Police or any law enforcement officer to apprehend the accused, citing ABS-CBN's headquarters on Mother Ignacia Street as their probable location.
The arrest order, dated January 13, 2016, and publicly disclosed on February 11, set bail at PHP10,000 each for provisional release.
The libel case was filed by Clarence Taguiam and Donna Marie Go, who accused Neri and Danilyn of defamation over an Instagram post that featured the complainants' photo alongside claims they were fraudulent camera sellers.
Clarence, through legal counsel, requested the post be deleted and a public apology issued. While the post was removed, no apology was provided.
Before the warrant's issuance, Neri and Danilyn filed a motion to defer proceedings and re-investigate the case, arguing they were not allowed to submit a counter-affidavit during the preliminary investigation. However, the court denied their motion.
Prosecution lawyer Jan Michael Cagulada stated that both accused had been duly subpoenaed to submit counter-affidavits but failed to do so, prompting the continuation of the legal process.
- PHP1,000-week-meal challenge
Neri, known for her cost-efficient lifestyle, sparked online debate with her PHP1,000 weekly meal plan.
In a Facebook post on September 10, 2023, she shared her "Neri’s Weekly Meal Plan," including a detailed shopping list for market day.
She encouraged moms to try the budget-friendly menu, even noting that it could leave room for extra snacks or school lunches.

However, many netizens doubted the feasibility of her budget, citing the rising cost of groceries and market goods.
Some criticized her plan as unrealistic, pointing out that even basic ingredients like eggs and meat would exceed the proposed budget, while others accused her of being out of touch with the realities of market shopping.
Several commenters challenged Neri to either reveal where she shops or conduct a live grocery run to prove her claim.
They further expressed disbelief that such a low budget could accommodate a week's worth of meals, especially in urban settings where prices are significantly higher.
The controversy highlighted the difficulties families face amid inflation, with many stating that PHP1,000 barely covers essential items like rice, which now costs between PHP46 and PHP60 per kilo.
Critics emphasized that Neri's plan might not reflect the financial struggles of ordinary Filipino households.

In the comments section, Neri clarified the plan's context, explaining that some of the vegetable ingredients came from her home garden, while the eggs were sourced from her poultry.
"DEPENDE RIN PO KUNG GAANO KAYO KARAMI. MAIIBA SIYEMPRE ANG BUDGET NYO," she added.
“KUNG 1-3 KATAO PER HOUSE AT KATAMTAMAN LANG ANG KAIN, KAYA YAN.
“KAILANGAN TALAGA MAY EXPLANATION AT DISCLAIMER AFTER (laughing emoji).
“MARAMING PARAAN PARA MAKATIPID, UMPISAHAN NA PARA MAGING WAIS SA BUHAY. MASAYA YUN (heart emoji)"
- Syndicated estafa and securities code violations
Neri was arrested by the Southern Police District in Pasay on November 23, 2024, for 14 counts of violating the Securities Regulation Code (SRC) and syndicated estafa.
While bail was permitted for the SRC charges, the non-bailable syndicated estafa case has resulted in her detention at the Pasay City Jail Female Dormitory.
Chito took to Facebook to defend Neri, mentioning the name "Chanda" and the company Dermacare—a beauty clinic—tied to her legal troubles.
Neri's connection with Dermacare began in October 2020, when she became an endorser and franchisee of the company.
She also promoted Dermacare's Franchise Partner program, which involved an investment scheme promising quarterly returns and post-dated checks over five years.
However, many investors claimed that these checks bounced, leading to widespread dissatisfaction and reports to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
In response, the SEC issued an advisory in September 2023 stating that Dermacare was not authorized to accept investments due to a lack of proper permits.
Despite Neri publicly announcing her disassociation from Dermacare in September 2023, the SEC filed charges against her in May 2024
She now faces penalties of up to PHP5 million and imprisonment ranging from seven to 21 years for SRC violations.
Syndicated estafa, a more severe form of fraud involving five or more individuals, carries a potential penalty of life imprisonment and is non-bailable under Philippine law.
Estafa, as defined by the Revised Penal Code, involves fraudulent actions, such as issuing bounced checks or signing contracts without intent to fulfill them.
Syndicated estafa, on the other hand, escalates these offenses when carried out by a group.
Her high-profile arrest mirrors that of actor Ricardo Cepeda, who was granted bail on a syndicated estafa charge earlier in 2024, though the exact terms of his bail have not been disclosed."
Earlier today, November 28, broadcasters Alvin Elchico and Doris Bigornia interviewed SEC Director Filbert Catalino Flores III on their TeleRadyo program.
Flores explained how Neri's role as an endorser led to her involvement in the case.
As the public watches closely, the outcome of this case may set a precedent for future celebrity endorsements and their potential legal implications.
