Nagluluksa ngayon ang Ateneo De Manila University (ADMU) basketball community sa pagpanaw ng dalawa nilang manlalaro na sina Rene Baterbonia, 19, at Divine Adili, 21.

Binawian ng buhay ang dalawa matapos malunod habang nagsasagawa ng team-building activity ang Ateneo Blue Eagles sa Dipaculao, Aurora, noong Lunes ng hapon, June 8, 2026.

Kinumpirma mismo ng ADMU ang malungkot na balita sa pamamagitan ng isang pahayag na inilabas sa kanilang social media accounts.

Dito nagpaabot ang unibersidad ng pakikiramay sa mga naiwang pamilya, kaibigan, at mahal sa buhay nina Baterbonia at Adili.

Mababasa sa pahayag (published as is): "It is with profound sadness that Ateneo de Manila University confirms the passing of two student-athletes of the Ateneo Men's Basketball Team, Rene Clert Baterbonia and Divine Adili, following a drowning incident that occurred during a team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora, on the afternoon of June 8, 2026.

"The entire Ateneo community mourns the loss of Rene and Divine.

"The University extends its heartfelt condolences to their families, friends, teammates, coaches, and loved ones.

"We ask the community to keep them in their prayers during this most difficult time."

Nangako rin ang ADMU na gagawin nila ang lahat ng kanilang makakaya para magbigay ng tulong-pinansiyal sa naiwang pamilya nina Baterbonia at Adili, gayundin sa ilan pang miyembro ng team na naapektuhan ng trahedya.

"The University is providing support to the families of Rene and Divine, as well as to their teammates and members of the Ateneo community affected by this tragedy.

"We respectfully ask for privacy and space for all those grieving as they come to terms with this profound loss."

Dagdag pa nila: "As a community, we mourn with the families and loved ones of Rene and Divine and entrust them to God's loving mercy.

Police Regional Office 3 releases initial findings

Bukod sa ADMU, naglabas din ng pahayag ang Police Regional Office 3 (PRO-3), kung saan ibinahagi nito ang paunang resulta ng imbestigasyon sa insidente.

Batay sa initial findings, naliligo umano ang dalawa nang tangayin sila ng malakas na agos patungo sa mas malalim na bahagi ng karagatan.

Naisugod pa umano sina Baterbonia at Adili sa pinakamalapit na ospital, ngunit kalaunan ay binawian din ng buhay.

Parte ng kanilang pahayag (published as is): "Based on initial reports, personnel of the Dipaculao Municipal Police Station immediately responded upon receiving information regarding the incident and coordinated with concerned agencies to provide the necessary assistance.

"The victims were promptly transported to a medical facility; however, they were later declared dead by the attending physician.

"PRO 3 assures the public that it will continue to diligently perform its mandate, conduct a thorough investigation, and coordinate with concerned agencies to ensure that all aspects of the incident are properly addressed.

"While the investigation remains ongoing, initial findings indicate that the victims were swimming when they were reportedly carried by a strong current into deeper waters.

Philippine Sports Commission mourns passing of Ateneo's Rene Baterbonia, Divine Adili

Nagpaabot din ng pakikiramay ang Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) sa pamilya nina Baterbonia at Adili.

Sa inilabas na pahayag ng PSC ngayong Martes, June 9, inilarawan nila ang pagkawala ng dalawang atleta bilang isang matinding dagok—hindi lamang sa kanilang mga pamilya at mahal sa buhay kundi maging sa buong komunidad ng Philippine sports.

Ayon sa PSC, bilang ahensiya ng pamahalaan na may mandato sa pagpapaunlad ng sports at kapakanan ng mga atleta, nakikipagtulungan na sila sa mga awtoridad sa isinasagawang imbestigasyon kaugnay ng insidente.

Kasabay nito, bumuo na rin ang komisyon ng isang "sports stakeholders' panel" upang makatulong sa mga hakbang ng Philippine National Police (PNP) at Department of Justice (DOJ) sa pag-alam sa buong pangyayari.

Kabilang sa mga inimbitahang makibahagi sa nasabing panel ang Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP), University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP), Commission on Higher Education (CHED), at National Youth Commission (NYC).

Layunin ng multi-stakeholder body na hindi lamang tukuyin ang nangyari, kundi suriin din ang kasalukuyang mga polisiya, protocol, at training practices upang makabuo ng mga rekomendasyong magpapalakas sa kaligtasan ng mga atleta sa kanilang pagsasanay at iba pang aktibidad.

Binigyang-diin ng PSC na mahalagang matutuhan ang mga aral mula sa insidente upang makabuo ng mas ligtas at mas maayos na sistema para sa mga atleta nang hindi isinasakripisyo ang kanilang kapakanan.

Sa pagtatapos ng kanilang pahayag, muling nagpahayag ng pakikiisa ang PSC sa mga naiwang pamilya, kaibigan, at mahal sa buhay nina Baterbonia at Adili sa gitna ng kanilang matinding pagdadalamhati.

WHO ARE Rene Baterbonia AND Divine Adili?

Maliban sa kanilang mga pamilya, kaibigan, at mga kasamahan sa koponan, labis din ang pagdadalamhati ngayon ng mga tagasuporta nina Baterbonia at Adili.

Bago mapabilang sa Ateneo Blue Eagles, kilala na si Baterbonia bilang isa sa mga mahuhusay na batang basketbolista sa bansa.

Naging bahagi siya ng koponan ng Davao Region na nagwagi ng gintong medalya sa basketball sa Palarong Pambansa 2025.

Dahil rin sa ipinakitang husay niya sa torneyo, itinanghal si Baterbonia bilang Most Valuable Player (MVP).

Samantala, nakilala naman ang Nigerian student-athlete na si Adili bilang isa sa mga pangunahing manlalaro ng Ateneo Blue Eagles.

Naging mahalagang bahagi siya ng team sa UAAP Season 88, kung saan naglaro siya bilang center at nagbigay ng malaking ambag sa frontline ng Ateneo Blue Eagles.
