Ang MMFF 2023 official entry na GomBurZa ay kuwento ng martyrdom nina Padre Mariano Gomes, Padre Jose Burgos, at Padre Jacinto Zamora.
Ipinaglaban ng tatlong Katolikong pari ang pagkakapantay-pantay, katotohanan, at kalayaan.
Ang pagbitay sa kanila noong 1872 sa Bagumbayan ay nagsilbing mitsa ng paghihimagsik ng mga Pilipino laban sa mga Kastila.
Bida sa GomBurZa sina Dante Rivero, Cedrick Juan, at Enchong Dee, sa direksiyon ni Pepe Diokno.

“Napakaimportante po ng kuwentong ito,” pahayag ni Direk Pepe sa mediacon noong Nobyembre 13, Lunes, sa TV5 Media Center sa Reliance St., Mandaluyong City.
“Hindi lang dahil makasaysayan siya pero napaka-relevant pa kasi niya sa mga Pilipino ngayon.”
Hindi masyadong nahimay sa Araling Panlipunan ang istorya ng GomBurZa, kaya wala masyadong alam ang mga estudyante tungkol sa kanila.
Yung PBB Teens, tinagurian pa silang "MaJoHa."

“Sa History, in our textbooks lalo na sa mga high school text, college textbooks, walang masyado about GomBurZa,” lahad ni Direk Pepe.
“But if you go to the National Museum and you enter, right in the center, andoon yung painting ng GomBurZa.
“And it’s because sa kanila nanggaling yung seed ng national consciousness natin. Sa kanila nag-spark.
“And so we’re very blessed to have the opportunity to tell their story. Yung sources po namin were Fr. Schumacher, a Jesuit historian and priest.
“We read a lot of his findings about the three priests, the secularization movement, about yung Cavite Mutiny na nasa pelikula which is one of the first sparks of the revolution that we had.”
Gaano ka-accurate ang pagkakalahad nila sa kuwento ng GomBurZa? If ever, gaano kalawig ang kanilang artistic or cinematic license sa paglatag nito?
“With the research, number one, nag-umpisa kami sa mga historical next na nakuha namin,” salaysay ni Direk Pepe.
“And from there, pinag-isipan namin yung kuwento, yung emosyon. So there was space for us to experiment and have some creative license when it comes to storytelling.
“I think, lahat naman ng pelikula, especially historical films ay may ganoong klaseng freedom to tell a story that is still based in history but still ahhmm focuses on emotion.
“So there are a lot of gaps that we have to fill. Number one, yung karakter ni Ketchup Eusebio na pang-apat pala na pinatay along with the three priests.
“There were so many conflicting reports about who he was, why he did what he did, kasi siya daw yung nagtraydor sa tatlong pari.
“Na we really had to ask ourselves, ano ba yung klaseng kuwento na gusto naming ikuwento and iparating, and that’s where we started conceptualization for Ketchup’s character.
“And at the end of the day, we really just wanted to tell an emotional, compelling story…
“So for me, enough sa akin, and more than enough sa akin — if people come in to the cinema and feel and get inspired, and feel what the priests felt nung pinatay sila.
“And feel what the audience in Bagumbayan felt when they saw the death.
“If they come out in the theater with tears in their eyes, they come out in the theater feeling more in love with the country at mas buhay ang alab ng puso, then for me, that’s more that enough already.”

Noong 2021 ang ika-500 taon ng Christianity sa Pilipinas. Kaya noong 2018 ay pinasimulan na ng JesCom Films ang paghahanda sa pelikulang GomBurZa kaugnay roon.
Naabutan ng COVID-19 pandemic ang proyekto pero itinuloy pa rin ng Jescom, at naging katuwang nila rito ang MQuest Ventures at CMB Film Services.
“It’s a film that JesCom has always wanted to do. Tsaka I heard about it for some time,” sabi ni Direk Pepe.
“When they were looking for a director to make the film, I was so honored that they would ask me na mag-pitch.
“So, nag-present po kami ng mga ideas about paano namin isu-shoot yung pelikula. And I feel very honored and blessed na napili po yung pitch namin and we got to work together.”
Nasa cast din ng GomBurZa sina Piolo Pascual, Elijah Canlas, Khalil Ramos, Tommy Alejandrino, Jaime Fabregas, Epy Quizon, Neil Sese, Arnold Reyes, Nanding Josef, Paolo O’Hara, Sue Prado, Carlitos Siguion-Reyna, Sheenly Gener, at Elora Españo.
Nag-shooting ang pelikula sa mga lumang simbahan ng Tayabas, Quezon at Taal, Batangas.
Sana, katulad ng lahat si Direk Pepe na proud sa kanyang trabaho kaya pati presscon at promo ay pinuntahan niya. Kasi, mahalagang malaman ang vision niya para sa historical film na ito.
At sana maliban sa promo, pati ang pagsali sa kauna-unahang Manila International Film Festival ay maging active din si Direk, dahil more than anyone, mga Pinoy talaga ang target audience ng pelikulang GomBurZa.
Sarili ba o bayan ang dapat unahin ang interes? Bayan siyempre!
At sana, biyayaan ang pelikulang ito ng magandang box-office results mula sa ating mga manonood dahil bibihira ang mga pelikulang ganito na nagpapalinaw at nagpapaala sa atin ng mga leksyon mula sa kasaysayan!

Special participation si Piolo Pascual sa GomBurZa bilang Padre Pedro Pelaez, ang mentor ni Padre Jose Burgos.
Totoo bang nahimatay si Piolo matapos kunan ang kanyang court scene sa movie, kung saan pagkahaba-haba ng kanyang Spanish monologue?

Napakunot-noo si Direk Pepe, “Hindi naman nahimatay… hindi naman nahimatay. Nag-ano lang…
“Well, kasi po, ang monologue ni PJ, I think, was around three to five pages long in full Spanish. Full Spanish. So straight.
“Tapos monologue siya, kasi he is arguing before the court, about yung mga karapatan nila in Spanish.
“And so he came on the day… medyo I think, mahirap talaga. Kasi buong monologue yun. Afterwards hindi naman siya nahimatay. Napahiga, napahiga nang bongga.”
Piolo Jose Pascual ang buong pangalan ni Piolo, at palayaw niya ang PJ. One take lang ba ang court scene na nagpahandusay kapagkuwan kay Piolo?
“Hindi naman po, pero naglo-long take kami dun. Although ang sabi sa amin ng Spanish coach ni PJ, yung Soanish coach ng cast — yung accent daw niya, perfect.
“Wala kaming kinailangang i-dub sa Spanish niya. Kasi, kuhang-kuha niya.”
Paano niya nakumbinsi si Piolo na tanggapin ang Padre Pedro Pelaez role sa GomBurZa?
“Well, number one, actually for a lot of the cast, yung resemblance nila sa role,” pagsisiwalat ni Direk Pepe.
“Nung nakita namin yung picture ni Father Pelaez sa totoong buhay, sabi ko, ‘This is Piolo.’ Kamukhang-kamukha.
“So that was one of the first things that we discussed. And then Father Pelaez kasi, napakaimportante niya sa history natin.
“Isa siyang unsung hero. Kung wala si Pelaez, wala si Burgos. Kung wala si Burgos, wala si Jose Rizal.
“And so napakaimportante ni Pelaez and I’m so happy na tinanggap niya yung role. Kasi, importanteng makilala ng mga tao si Father Pelaez.”
Ang isa pang MMFF 2023 movie ni Piolo ay ang Mallari, kung saan bida siya. Tatlong karakter ang ginampanan dito ni Piolo, at ang pangunahing karakter ay pari rin.
