Soaring is perhaps the simplest way to describe the trajectory of Rene Clert Baterbonia’s life before it was tragically cut short.

At just 19 years old, the gifted basketball player from Mindanao had moved from one waypoint to the next, each milestone bringing him closer to the future he had envisioned not only for himself but for the family he hoped to uplift.

Armed with a rare combination of size, discipline, and hyperacuity on the court, Rene steadily expanded his arsenal of accomplishments—from a promising provincial standout into one of the country’s most exciting young basketball prospects.

The path ahead appeared vast.

It should have been filled with firsts: his first collegiate season, his first games before packed arenas, his first opportunity to test himself against the country’s best players.

But instead, what remains is a stark entry in the record books.

The sterility of statistics tells us that Rene Baterbonia died on June 8, 2026, at the age of 19.

To family and friends, however, he was simply Bobet.

His connection to Davao became especially evident following his passing, when one of his coaches shared a now-viral recollection that offered a glimpse into the teenager’s dreams and motivations.

According to Coach Jess Linus Evangelio, Rene messaged him before flying to Manila: “Coach, dili sa ko mubalik mga five years sa Davao kay gusto nako pag madato ko, ma-ahon nako akong pamilya sa kapobre.”

Translated into English, the statement roughly means: “Coach, I won’t come back to Davao for about five years because when I become successful, I want to be able to lift my family out of poverty.”

Like many young athletes from humble beginnings, Rene appeared to view basketball not merely as a sport, but as an opportunity to improve the lives of the people he loved.

Philippine sports community mourns

The tragedy reverberated outside of the Ateneo campus.

The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) described the deaths of Rene and Divine as a devastating loss not only to their families and loved ones but also to the wider Philippine sports community.

As part of its response, the PSC announced the formation of a sports stakeholders’ panel to help review the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The panel includes representatives from organizations such as the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP), the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP), the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), and the National Youth Commission (NYC).

According to the PSC, the objective is not only to understand what transpired but also to review existing safety measures, protocols, and training practices in hopes of preventing similar tragedies in the future.

A mother’s unanswered questions

No one was more devastated by Rene’s death than his mother, Rovelyn Baterbonia.

In an emotional interview shared by Agusan del Sur Governor Santi Barriga Cane Jr., the grieving mother recounted the final conversations she had with her son before the tragedy.

The grieving mother expressed frustration that she had allegedly not been fully informed beforehand about the nature of the activities her son would undergo.

“Wala mi nila gi-orient nga ‘Ma’am, pag moanhi imong anak naa mi training ing-ana, ing-ana, ing-ana.’ Kung gipasabot lang ko nila nga naa na, di ko mosugot.”

(Translation: They did not orient us about the type of training my son will go through once he gets there. If only they [ADMU] had informed us earlier, I would not have given my approval.)

According to Rovelyn in a separate interview with Mariz Umali earlier today, June 9, 2026, Rene told her he would be unable to use his cellphone for about a week due to a training activity in Baler.

She recalled simply reminding him to be careful and to take care of himself.

At the time, she believed he was merely attending a routine training program.

“Akala ko training lang nga, hindi military training. Ano ba iyon?” she said.

Rovelyn also questioned why her son, a basketball player, ended up participating in activities in the sea.

“Malaki talaga ang tanong ko. Bakit nagpunta doon sa dagat? Kasi basketball player naman yung anak ko, hindi naman swimming.”

She further raised concerns about the circumstances surrounding the incident and called for a thorough investigation.

Throughout the interview, Rovelyn repeatedly emphasized that she was seeking answers.

“Gusto ko ng justice talaga.”

“Gusto ko lang malaman bakit ganun.”

“Marami akong tanong na hindi pa nasasagot.”

The grieving mother also questioned why rescue personnel and medical responders were allegedly not immediately available, and voiced concerns regarding information she had received about the events leading up to her son’s death.

She additionally spoke about the pain of learning about the tragedy from others while desperately seeking confirmation about her son’s condition.

At one point during the interview, she broke down while reflecting on the dreams that Rene had worked so hard to pursue.

“Isang saglit lang ang pangarap ng aking anak, binasag nila.”
