The television industry is back in full swing this 2021.
It has since recovered from a year of airing replays and erratic TV programming brought about by the pandemic and the shutdown of ABS-CBN in 2020.
Teleseryes, reality shows, and live events all had their share of intense moments and bloopers that caught the attention of viewers and netizens, and became trending topics on social media.
In random order, PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) looks back on some of the trending moments that happened on Philippine TV this 2021:
1. KD Estrada and Anji Salvacion’s heartbreak story in Pinoy Big Brother
One of the trending moments on the tenth season of Pinoy Big Brother (PBB) was the story of KD Estrada and Anji Salvacion. The two singers of ASAP Natin ‘To used to be involved in a close relationship, but already broke up upon entering the PBB house.
While the two became close again inside the PBB house, Anji established her boundaries and clarified that she could only offer friendship, especially since she was having a hard time grasping KD’s situation.
KD had been open in saying that he has been experiencing anxiety since he entered the PBB house.
In a heart-to-heart conversation aired on November 11, Anji got straight to the point and turned down KD.
“I wanted to get this straight na there will never be a chance. I wanted to say this to you, there will never be a chance for us to have a romantic relationship.”
A sobbing KD later talked to Anji and admitted he was hurt that Anji did not reciprocate his feelings. “I’m sorry if I seem I’m such the worst person in the world, but it just hurts that you said you never felt the same way.”
Even then, KD and Anji have remained friends inside the house.
2. Alexa Ilacad and Albie Casiño figure in “peanut butter” war inside the PBB house.
One of the highlights of PBB season 10 was the misunderstanding between Alexa Ilacad and Albie Casino over a jar of peanut butter.
From their team's weekly budget, Alexa wanted to buy herself a little jar of peanut butter, but Albie felt it was more “practical” to buy one kilo of chicken.
Later, Albie got irked with Alexa hid the peanut butter jar, “Napakawalanghiya mo naman. Lahat tayo dito gutom.”
In the end, the two fixed their misunderstanding right before Albie was evicted from the PBB house.
3. The Clash contestant Reign Lanz misses a note at the end of her performance.
The Clash season four contestant Reign Lanz performed Mon del Rosario’s song, “Sino Ang Baliw?” for the first round of the competition.
Reign had a flawless start and gave her all. But at the end of her performance, she was not able to hit the note.
During the panel, Reign admitted that she was dismayed by what happened. She told the judges, “Medyo disappointed po kasi iyong dulo, hindi po ganun iyong pag-rehearse ko.”
Judge Ai-Ai delas Alas suggested that Reign could have saved her performance by highlighting her uniqueness as a performer.
To make light of the situation, Ai-Ai then said that if she were in Reign's place, she would have resorted to dramatics.
“Kung ako, magbabaliw-baliwan ako. Naku, neng, pasok ka kapag nagbaliw-baliwan ka diyan ‘tapos with matching kahit papaano, iyong boses mo naman is okay, pasok ka diyan. Kapag gumulong ka diyan, neng, pik pak boom shakalakala ang ibibigay ko sa iyo!”
“Pik Pak Boom Shakalakala” is Ai-Ai’s line each time she is blown away by contestant's performance.
Unfortunately, Reign lost to co-finalist Lovely Restituto and was unable to advance to the next round.
4. Darren Espanto flubs song lyrics during ASAP performance.
In the October 3 episode of ASAP Natin ‘To, Darren Espanto missed the lyrics for his song-and-dance number of Bobby Brown’s “Little Step.”
Darren had a confident start as he danced his way to the stage, but fumbled when it was time for him to sing. He was not able to read the lyrics on the teleprompter and ended up mumbling through the song.
He attempted to maintain his composure during the dismal performance, and gestured for the production team to scroll up the teleprompter.
During the interlude of his performance, Darren said, “That’s how you know we’re doing a live show, everyone! ASAP Natin ‘To!”
After the number, Darren said in his spiels, “Guys, lesson learned today, kapag live tayo, huwag tayong magre-rely sa teleprompter. Dapat memorize mo iyong lyrics mo.”
