Carlos Edriel “Caloy” Yulo has achieved a feat that has never been done before — winning back-to-back gold medals for the Philippines at the Paris Olympics 2024 for artistic gymnastics.
This remarkable achievement places Carlo in elite company, second only to Hidilyn Diaz, the other Filipino to have won an Olympic gold medal, who triumphed in weightlifting at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics.
While his accomplishments have brought widespread acclaim and national pride, part of his support system comes from his girlfriend Chloe San Jose.

Chloe's relationship with Olympic gold medalist Carlos Yulo
After almost two years of dating online, Carlos and Chloe met in person for the first time at the 31st Vietnam Southeast Asian Games in 2021.
In an exclusive interview with PEP at the red-carpet homecoming for the gymnast held at the Heritage Hotelon June 21, 2021, Chloe related how it all started with her reaching out to Carlos via X (formerly Twitter) and introducing herself as a fan.
"Nag-reach out po ako sa kanya na, ‘Oh, I'm a fan,’ kasi right after po yun ng [2019] SEA Games.
"So, a few months after SEA Games po, tapos sabi ko o, parang I kinda remember a guy, Carlos Yulo, tapos parang gusto ko siya kaibiganin," she told PEP, laughing.
At the said homecoming event, which was also a belated victory party for the Philippine national gymnastics teams, Chloe told PEP.ph how nervous she was doing a karaoke number.
"Kinakabahan po ako more like kasi may mga nanonood po pero if I'm gonna sing to him na siya lang po, then ayos lang po kasi palagi ko naman po siyang kinakantahan," she said.
As it happened, after VIPs and members of the men's national gymnastics team took a turn at the mic, Chloe sang a sweet serenade for Carlo while holding his hand tightly.
The then 20-year-old digital creator showcased her strong vocals with her rendition of the song “Ikaw Nga” by Michael Pangilinan.
Carlos and Chloe made their relationship official on June 29, 2020.
It is clear they are both comfortable with their long-distance relationship (LDR), proving even how manageable it is to those expressing undue pessimism about LDR.
As Carlos said in the same interview at the homecoming event, being away from each other has never been an issue between them
And just as he's been grateful to have found a thoughtful girlfriend, Chloe was all praises for her beau for going out of his way to please her.
The Filipino-Australian YouTube vlogger revealed that gift-giving seemed to be the national gymnast's love language.
"Mahal, bilhan kita ng ganyan, ng ganito," she recounted.
She also cited how malambing Carlos can get when they're together, as she said, "‘Mahal, come here mahal,’ and nagta-touch po siya palagi."

Defending Carlos against his mother
After Carlos emerged victorious at the recently held Olympics, netizens have been eyeing the social media movement of his family, particularly his mother, Angelica Poquiz Yulo.
Speculators say that Angelica disowned Carlos in the past, though recent interviews detail a different narrative from the athlete's mother.
Some also spread the story of Angelica squandering away Carlos's earnings, it remains unbacked by evidence.
On August 4, 2024, a day after Carlos clinched his first gold medal, Angelica brought out the friction between her and Carlos in the open on Bombo Radyo.
She revealed, "Ang naging mitsa lang naman talaga ever since yung babae [Chloe] talaga. Lalong lumaki [ang hidwaan].
"Nagkaroon kasi ng training camp si Caloy [palayaw ni Carlos], kasama ko yung asawa ko, naghatid kami sa Terminal 3.
"Ang sabi nung coach niya, 'Tita, alam mo na ba ang nangyari?' Sabi ko, 'No idea at all.' Kasi hindi naman kami nag-uusap ni Caloy, e.
"Pagdating pala dun, ang sabi ni Coach, pagdating ni Eldrew at ng teammate niya, yung babae wala dun sa apartment niya.
"[Nasa] bahay na tinitirhan niya [Carlos] na binabayaran ng JOC [Japan Olympic Committee] na nire-reimburse ng PSC [Philippine Sports Commission] every end of the year.
"So, dapat bahay lang siya ng mga atleta, parang dorm. So, yung mga outsiders, dapat wala dun, especially yung walang kinalaman sa training.
"Pinakita ni Caloy, tinanggap niya [sina Eldrew at Miguel], nandun yung maleta ng mga bata [sa apartment].
"Sa tingin mo, yung anak ko, fifteen years old, patutulugin ko sa para lang siyang studio type?
"Patutulugin ko yung anak ko na menor de edad kasama siya [Carlos] at yung babae [Chloe]?
"Mahirap, e, siyempre mga lalaki, anything na mapatingin.
"Actually, ayun din yung sabi ni Coach... na baka mapatingin si Miguel sa puwet dahil nakakalat, e, maging masama yung bata."
Eldrew is the younger brother of Caloy.
Angelica also clarified that she saw no issue with his son's relationship when it first unfolded.
"Una, medyo okay pa [kami] kasi tumatawag-tawag naman sila dito ni [Carlos]. Hindi ko rin naman siya masyadong pinapansin nun," she recalled.
"Noong nagkita kami dito, parang feeling ko inilalayo niya sa amin si Caloy.
"Oo, alam ko, gusto nilang magkasama. Gusto niyang makasama si Caloy, gusto rin siyang makasama ni Caloy.
"Pero siyempre, kasi pamilya kami. Kumbaga, parang matagal din namin siyang hindi nakasama. Because of pandemic, di ba?
"So siyempre, kung siya gusto rin siyang makasama nung girl, how much more kami na pamilya niya na gusto rin siyang makasama?
"Even yung mga kapatid niya kasi, talagang medyo nalulungkot lang kasi sobrang close silang magkakapatid.
"Pero after nung nangyari, yung ano namin ni Caloy, parang [dumistansiya] even yung youngest ko, yung eldest ko.
"Sobrang malalim yung galit na nararamdaman ng youngest ko kay Caloy."
Chloe, on the other hand, has remained resolute about her civil treatment of the Yulo family.
Later, on the same day of Angelica's Bombo Radyo interview, Chloe published a Facebook post alluding to Angelica's alleged caption that downplayed his son's achievements.
Chloe wrote: "mother dear i'm gonna hold your hand when i say this... pero wait ka lang, tapusin lang po namin yung vault finals—paki-on na your comment section po ah, di yung nag dedelete ka pa + off com sec [kiss emoji]."
"japan pa din talaga.. lakas! but malakas din naman si Carlos Edriel Yulo, GOD IS WITH HIM."
