Sisters are expected to anchor one another, and for years, Kim Chiu’s “number one critic, number one fan, and superwoman” fulfilled that role across every transition their family endured.
Lakam Chiu stood with Kim through every era—the breakout years, the setbacks, the public heartbreaks, the career reinventions, the small wins. She was a steady presence behind every milestone Kim ever fought for.
These days, however, Lakam is tangled in headlines that upend the image many thought they already knew.
After news of Kim lodging a complaint against Lakam on December 2, 2025, showbiz spectators are watching closely and processing the fallout.
To understand how the two arrived at this moment, here’s a closer look at the life of Lakambini “Lakam” Chiu.

EARLY LIFE
Lakambini Yap Chiu was born in 1981, as the first of five children to businessman William Chiu, a Chinese-Filipino from Mindoro, and Louella Yap Chiu, a Tsinoy native from the Dinagat Islands who later settled in Surigao del Sur.
Now 44, she is the sibling who carries the longest memory of the family’s early struggles.
Her parents’ separation in 1998 marked a tumultuous period for the Chiu children.
With neither parent offering a stable home, the siblings—Lakam, Twinkle, William, Kim, and John Paul—were taken in by their paternal grandmother.

What followed was a childhood marked by constant movement across the Visayas and parts of Mindanao.
They lived in Tacloban, Cebu, Cagayan de Oro, General Santos, Mindoro, and eventually settled again in Cebu City by 2006.

LAKAM'S CAREER
Lakam tried her hand at entrepreneurship.
Starting 2012, she took the lead in operating several franchise businesses, starting with a branch of Potato Corner in September of that year.
Just a few months later, in February 2013, they launched a branch of Julie’s Bakeshop—one of the largest bakery chains in the country.
These small businesses became the training ground for Lakam’s hands-on managerial style. She handled logistics, inventory, and daily operations.

She had a significant role that came up in 2022, when House of Little Bunny, Kim’s leather goods label, was launched.
Endorsed for its structured mini bags and accessible-luxury positioning, the brand quickly gained momentum online.
Behind the scenes, Lakam was part of the management group that oversaw the business as it scaled.
Reports indicated she handled internal operations and financial coordination, placing her in a crucial position during the brand’s growth.

HEALTH ISSUES
Though it’s rare to see Kim in her showbiz endeavors without Lakam by her side, the eldest Chiu sister is rarer to find in headlines.
It was only in April 2023 that her name broke into mainstream news—and not for anything light.
She had been rushed to the hospital and fell unconscious for several days in a medical emergency that happened to collide with Kim’s 33rd birthday.
Kim asked for prayers, describing her sister as her “strength,” and confessed she struggled to respond to birthday messages because the unfolding crisis had eclipsed everything else in her life.
Months later, in a March 2024 interview with Dra. Vicki Belo, the sisters opened up about the ordeal. Doctors had warned the family to prepare for the worst.

Kim recalled being presented with documents akin to a DNR-related form, which is a slip conveying the guardian’s permission not to resuscitate should Lakam stop breathing.
The Kapamilya actress described the moment as earth-shattering: “Gumuho yung mundo ko… Lahat kasi siya ang may alam. Naiwan niya ako nang hanging.”
Kim spent several days in the Padre Pio church, praying for a miracle. Against all odds, that miracle came. Doctors were stunned when Lakam suddenly regained consciousness.
Lakam's recovery, however, was not smooth. She struggled with depression and frustration during the healing process.
Kim, admittedly overprotective, often clashed with her, urging her to prioritize rest.
Reflecting on the experience, Lakam said it reshaped her perspective: “Life is really short… let’s value each other and make the most out of every day.”

Lakam Chiu, sued for qualified theft
The harmony between the two sisters fizzled out.
On December 2, 2025, Kim filed a qualified theft complaint against Lakam at the Quezon City Prosecutor’s Office.
In her sworn statement, she cited “substantial amounts” missing from her business assets and noted that months of internal review led to the discovery.
Kim emphasized how emotionally difficult the decision was: “This is one of the most painful steps I have ever taken in my life.”
She added that filing the case was necessary not only to safeguard her company, but also to protect the livelihoods of her employees.
The public had sensed tension earlier that year, particularly when the sisters unfollowed each other on Instagram in August.

But until the filing, Kim had kept the issue vague, occasionally posting cryptic messages about betrayal and responsibility.
This time, however, she chose to speak up: “I am choosing responsibility and accountability…I ask for understanding as our family navigates this difficult chapter.”
At present, the case remains under preliminary investigation, and Lakam has not issued a public statement.
Under the Revised Penal Code, qualified theft refers to stealing property under circumstances that betray a special level of trust—making it more serious than ordinary theft.
Depending on the amount involved, penalties can range from six years and one day up to forty years.
