For a while, 2026 appeared to be shaping up as a year of promising wins for Franco Mabanta.

March saw the Peanut Gallery Media Network (PGMN) CEO marry his longtime partner Victoria Escover after nearly a decade together.

Around the same period, Franco also celebrated his 100th day of sobriety.

On his 43rd birthday in February, close friend and PGMN anchor James Deakin greets him with every ounce of optimism: “The best is so far ahead of you it hasn't even been written yet.”

And yet, less than three months later on May 6, 2026, Franco would be swept into one of the country’s most talked-about political-media controversies.

He and several associates were arrested over an alleged extortion complaint involving former House Speaker Martin Romualdez.

While the case and its related investigations continue to develop in the coming days, public interest surrounding the media personality has also reignited curiosity about the many lives he appeared to live both on and off camera over the years.

“My close friend, who I love with everything I have, also struggles with it. And the thing I’ve noticed, in him and in others who carry this, is that they are almost always the kindest, most gentle souls in the room.

“People who have so much to give to this world that it becomes overwhelming. Who feel everything more than the rest of us. Who absorb pain that others would deflect.”

FAMILY

A Facebook post from October 13, 2018 relates the thoughts of 35-year-old Franco about being the eldest of 40 first cousins.

As he described it then: “Yep, our parents were quite fertile and quite h*rny (bless their Catholic souls).

“As a teenager, I'd enthusiastically attend our family reunions fully expecting a dozen beautiful, adrenalized, oftentimes demented monkeys wrapped around me like a tree from Tarzan. So much fun.

“As the younger cousins got older, though, and the games turned into 'life', each of them began their inevitable processes of finding themselves/learning who they are (as all kids do); they started developing specific skillsets, formulating value systems and personal life preferences, concretizing new talents, and forging their own individual world views.

“Essentially what I'm trying to say is that they gradually morphed into little factories of F*CKING AWESOME SURPRISES. It was -- and still is -- all kinds of fascinating to witness.”

He also recalled how his grandfather introduced his mother to the original Star Wars trilogy in the 1970s, describing films as something that quietly shape generations across families.

COMMERCIALS

What many believe to be Franco Mabanta’s most recognizable television stint was portraying the character “Jasper” in the 2002 Coca-Cola promo ad series “Sinong uminom sa Coca-Cola sa Villa Villa?”

The campaign, which also featured Angel Locsin and Heart Evangelista, revolved around a mystery-style holiday storyline tied to a Coca-Cola bottle cap promo.

In the specific installment titled “Salarin,” Heart’s character notices her Coke bottle missing during a Christmas gathering and exclaims, “O, nasaan ang Coke ko? Ayun siya!”

The ad became memorable among early-2000s viewers because of its serialized storytelling format, holiday setting, and recurring “Villa Villa” characters—helping Franco gain wider recognition during the period.

Fatherhood later became one of the most personal subjects Franco openly reflected on online.

In a July 2021 feature published by When In Manila shortly after becoming a first-time parent, Franco spoke at length about the emotional shift that came with holding his son for the first time.

Rather than describing the experience through “clichéd” words like breathtaking or incredible, Franco mused on parenthood as a moment that fundamentally changes a person’s sense of self and ownership over their own life.

“Holding your firstborn for the first time is unique,” he wrote, “in that it is literally the one and only human experience that inspires all new dads and moms to fully accept — willingly and in an instant — that their own lives are no longer about them.”

He further described parenthood as being filled with “beautiful, definitive irony,” noting how parents simultaneously hope to raise compassionate and moral children while also being willing to cross extraordinary lines for their safety and well-being.

“This year my little phenom was born,” Franco concluded in the feature.

Alleged Extortion Complaint

Franco Mabanta and PGMN became the subject of national attention on May 6, 2026, after Franco and four associates were arrested by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) over an alleged extortion complaint involving former House Speaker Martin Romualdez.

ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW ↓

According to reports by ABS-CBN News and Rappler, the complaint stemmed from allegations that Franco and his group attempted to demand hundreds of millions of pesos in exchange for withholding videos supposedly linking Romualdez to corruption issues tied to flood control projects.

The NBI alleged that the arrests were conducted through an entrapment operation in Pasig City.

Philippine News Agency reported that authorities estimated the alleged demand to be around PHP300 million to PHP350 million, supposedly tied to the non-release of damaging online content and video materials involving Romualdez.

The controversy quickly became one of the most talked-about political-media stories online due to Franco’s visibility as founder and CEO of PGMN.

Following the arrest, social-media users revisited Franco’s previous broadcasts, political commentary, and perceived ties to Duterte-aligned spaces within the Philippine online political ecosystem.

Franco, however, denied the allegations against him.

In statements cited by multiple reports, he described the arrest as a “setup” allegedly intended to stop the release of a planned exposé involving Romualdez and flood control controversies.

As of writing, the case and its related investigations remain ongoing.
